I think they left because of poor sales. I'm relatively sure the last ones were in the late 80's (87-89) I think

Peugot and Renault were both on the virge of bankruptcy, and abandoned the North American market due to the additional expense (at a time they were running at a loss) of marketing vehicles where many of the standards were different. It is very expensive to develop vehicles for both European and North America markets, and since their core markets were in Europe (especially in France), they decided to regroup there.

What's interesting, though, is that both have made a fairly strong recovery, and are even starting to put cars into the show circuit, flirting with returning to the North American market.

A 206 would NEVER be offered here. The mods required to bring it up to goofy North American specs would be wholly prohibitive.

I don't know about that. Esquiss is an awesome Peugot modifier in France ( i think) and their kits make the 206's look awesome!

the pic is a bit small so hopefully you'll see it clear enough

How about price & poor build quality

Mid eighties Peugeot GAVE a few to the dealership I was at to try and sell. The 405Mi16 had a suggested price of 46 000 dollars, that was 5 000 more than a 944.

I also worked for the Peugeot dealer until they left the first time in 80. A 604 with the PRV (Peugeot-Renault-Volvo)V6 had two carbs... 1 one barrel and 1 two barrel. We ran an ad show it was similar to the benz 280SE for 10 g's less. The first and maybe only call we got on the ad went ...." I ain't paying no 16 grand for no car I never heard of !!!!" this was when real mini's were less than 3 grand.

Peugeot has bad build quality? I've seen a fair number of them in Asia that have racked up an incredible number of km's...I've heard that they are very well built.

hummm i actually saw a lot of them back in HK last yr... if shipping to US and to Can is expensive, won't it be more expensive to switch the steering wheel to the right AND ship it to Asia? (i believe the steering wheel of France's vehicles are on the left...?)

they make them in mexico.. sell them that is.. so i think there the steering column is right.
in puerto rico they have a 206 GTi
it has a 16v 2.0 160hp 1100kg (doesnt say Tq on their website)
same one in england though is 134hp/142tq.. prolly from restrictions

There's more to it than that. Crash testing the vehicles and modifying them to meet our standards, and north american emissions standards are really stringent. Modifying a car to meet north american standards is an incredibly expensive proposition. That being said, with Renault owning part of Nissan, if they felt like coming back they already have the dealer infrastructure in place to do it. Just need the cars.
