    Default oil recomendations

i drive an 02 gti and was just wondering what the rest of beyond members use for oil in their cars.

my cars owners manual recommends an oil with a viscosity of 5w 40 but everywhere i look they dont have the oil i want with that viscosity. is it necessary to have this viscosity rating or can i go with another rating like 10 w 40 or something else?

Canadian tire has Mobil 1 I think. I use Motul oil, it's a high performance synthetic oil which, in my opinion, is better than Mobil 1 synthetic oil.

    Mobil1 10w30 in summer. 5w30 in winter.

You should be fine with 5w30. Only reason I run 10w30 in summer is because of the aftermarket turbo.

Mobile1 0W-40 European car oil. Crappy Tire has it in 1L containers. I use it on my SRT-4.

Which canadian tire is that? I cant find 1L containers of the stuff anywhere in the south. I have to go buy it from partsource all the time. I assume canadian tire would be cheaper, even though I think their partnered stores. Maybe I'm blind but I've looked at both stores in the south and asked employees and they never have 0w40, just the 5w40. What would be really nice is if someone would sell the stuff in 4L jugs.

I found out just the other day from 5th ave and northland VW that they use 5W30 full Syn. Well thats what the service advisors told me. I use Castrol full syn 5W30. Costco has a 6x1liter box for 35$.

    Cool RED LINE!!!

RED LINE is the best oil, that is available at most places!!!! Better then Mobil 1. Mobil 1 is about $10 per liter. Red Line is about $13. I dont have money to burn, but my Baby sure burns her blood. She has 256k on her so I have to support her.

I am looking for the best oil filter though. What would you gys say is the best???

    Thx

A friend of mine works for shell, and I can get any oil made by shell (penzoil and quakerstate I think are 2 of them) and I can get as much oil as I want, regular or synthetic, for free. Unfortunately I use Mobil 1 and don't get any free oil lol.

I will have to go to northland CT next time i need some mobil, I bet its cheaper than partsource, thanks.

Mobil 1 oil filters are the best so I heard. They cannot be purchased here in Canada or atleast Calgary. Other very good oil filters are the NAPA Gold oil filters made by WIX and the K&N Oil Filters. Keep in mind that the K&N filters are made for the best flow and subsequently wont filter as well as some of the other ones.
