Hooking a wireless router to a voip router

Is it even possible?

We got VoIP, and Rogers cable internet (in London, ON) extreme. The VoIP router is wired. We got a wireless router, figuring that we could just plug it in to the VoIP and off you go but it's not working so easy.

How do I make this work?

Plug your phone into the voip.
Plug the internet port on the voip into one of the ports in your wireless router (ie) 1, 2, 3, 4) NOT the internet port.
Plug your wireless router's internet port into your cable modem.

You may want to connect your computer to the voip router first to disable the DHCP server so that your computer is pulling ips from your wireless router.

Should work.

Done and done, and it works just fine.

If you do it the other way around (wireless router into voip router into cable modem) then the voip box can keep priority over your internet traffic, and it helps to maintain good voice quality even when you're downloading a whole ton of stuff.
I tried it the other way around, and when using bittorrent the phone was pretty much unuseable. So I now run everything through the voip box. Sucks because you have to set all of your firewall rules (port forwarding, etc.) in the voip box as well though.

If the wireless router has QOS, just give the voip box highest priority.
