Default What can cause smoke out of the exhuast?

What can cause an extreme amount of smoke from the exhuast? I know it's not oil, it may have something to do with the coolant. I check a couple things, the coolant is a little high, other than that i'm not too sure.

    Thanks

I'm not too sure i didn't see it, i'm actually thinking the head gasket went. I could smell it when i sat in the car, seemed to smell a little like burnt coolant.

If the coolant level in your reservoir is high, it could be a headgasket leak. Also, if the smoke exiting your tailpipe is a lingering, white smoke, this is also a sign of a headgasket leak....

Is this in the Prelude?? If not, then what kind of car? Most likely my diagnosis is correct, if it's blowing white thick smoke....

Black smoke can be carbon burning up in your exhaust system too...... like when you goose your moms mini-van that has never been past 3000 rpm and you see a big cloud of smokie... thats carbon build-up being shot out your exhaust system.

If you have huge amounts of smoke though it is most likely coolant..... huge amounts of black smoke would only last a few seconds before the engine siezed, due to no lube inside your cylinders.

    Bluish smoke=oil burning, needs rings

    Black smoke=rich condition

    White smoke=headgasket leak.

None of these are particularly good...

Now, if the smoke turns into flames, then you or your car has seen too many reruns of F&F...
