Unhappy My Car wont turn off(Diesling) and then my car over heats

When I turn my car on, the engine seems to be going at high RPMs and wont "calm down." Then when I try to turn it off it keeps going, or diesling. My car will keep diesling for a couple minutes and then my car will begin to overheat. HELP!

What kind of car is it? Is it the firebird mentioned in your profile?

I'm going to assume it is a gasoline engine, carburated, electronic ignition coil feeding a distributor.

How well is the engine maintained? When was the last time the spark plugs were changed?

Dieseling is usually caused by the timing being out or severe carbon deposits in the combustion chamber. Get a timing light and check the timing out.

Turn it off while it's still in gear.
