you can time how long it takes the person to get from one line to the other. then with that you can calculate the speed

Yes they do -- you think your friend was bullshitting you or something. Go and download/purchase the Gumball 3000 Vid and see what happens near the end of the flick -- they were issued speeding tickets by ground units that had speeds relayed to them from air-units in planes.

Yah, they'll do it. My Dad was pulled over when they did that a few years back. I'm sure they still do it.
No one really looks up for cops, but the yellow lines are a good give away.

Planes?? I thought they used helicopters and if you're caught speeding, they dispatch the police who are waiting ahead.

yup they do it, they get the plane up in the air and catch like hundreds of people at once. it's not for just 1 car or something like that. they have to make it worthwhile to send the plane up.

    It's called a road-block. Think about it.

They used to use planes on the way to edmonton, and to Banff, not sure if they still do though.

AFAIK, they've stopped issuing tickets this way for several years now because it's so easy to contest in court that this method is inaccurate. Being off by 0.1 second with the stopwatch on the plane means they're off by about 5mph if I remember right. I contested this in Red Deer court before, it's fun being your own lawyer. What's funny is the cop even had a certificate for "stopwatch training" to prove that he was certified in using a stopwatch, so he's gotta be accurate!

The way they did it was a plane flew above ground with a guy and a stopwatch timed your average speed by seeing how long it takes to go past 2 yellow lines. They then relay back to the ground car where you are and the cop just jumps out and pulls you over. When I got pulled over, I almost nailed the cop cuz he jumped out so late, and I was going 140.

Actually I got one from a chopper about 5km inside the Banff toll gates two summers ago. I think it was part of an RCMP training class because they had probably 30 officers (all very young looking) handing out tickets like they were going out of style! I thought about contesting it, but taking a day off to drive up to Banff and try to contest it didn't quite make sense for me at the time. Maybe I should have!

FYI for all the people that are worried when they see a cessna flying over on highway 2, it's not necessarily a cop...

I've gone up several times with some amateur pilots and flown to CFB Penhold, and these guys sometimes (ok alot of times) can't navigate very well so they follow highway 2
