    Default Sushi Bar Zipang

Anyone try this place? GF wants to take me out for my BDay dinner and I love sushi. Wanted to try somewhere new.

Make reservations. It's a hotspot and is really busy.

Now I've never tried it myself but my buddy who often dines out, absolutely loves the place.

Zen 8 and Shikiji are also two very popular sushi joints

Decor and ambiance are above average. Staff are friendly, place is clean.

Foodwise, their rolls are above average in taste and presented beautifully because they apply the roe after cutting the rolls, and they don't skimp on the roe.

Someone on here said that their specialty is whatever sashimi is fresh that day. Time between ordering and getting the rolls out is good.

Overall, food is way better than Globefish but a notch below Shikiji. Still a good place to try out.

This is the one in bridgeland right? I've only gone there once, was awesome and really like it, the unagi was excellent! Same with the spicy salmon. Decent pricing, 3 hungry as hell people + tea I think it came to ~ 80 bucks with tax and tip.

Haha...I can eat $80 worth of sushi myself...LOL

Good to hear, look forward to trying them out.

Where is Shikiji's and what type of atmosphere is it?

Shikiji is on the east side of Centre Street North, and around 15th Ave. Right beside a 24 hour internet hangout.

The only knock is that their bathrooms aren't as clean as they should be for such a nice place. Zipang's decor is a little classier.

Good to know. I don't care how good the food is, I can't stand a shitty atmosphere.

    Zipang's it is.

Maybe I have different sushi taste, but I think Zipang is decent quality sushi but very overpriced... $50 of sushi for 2 people should make you happy full not wanting to spend another $50 to be full. Presentation is nice if you like to look at your food instead of eating it. Plus I didn't see a single Japanese person in that place (or remotely asian for that matter)!

$50, are you serious? You are obviously not a real sushi lover.

Fatty Toro is $6 a piece. Cheap and sushi don't mix...LOL

well if you're cheap, you should do all you can eat sushi, but that's like the lowest grade sushi haha.

When I went there, all the staff were asian. Actually, I don't care who makes my sushi, as long as it is good.

You'll be happy at Misato though. My gf and I can't finish their $17 Calgary Special Roll (4 types of fish, avocado, real crab, and shrimp) in one sitting on most nights. Delicious and big (about 85% of a hockey puck diameter). Their service can suck depending who you get, and wait times are long. Takeout's a good bet there.

T&T supermarket sushi isn't bad either for the price.

You get what you pay for...but in my opinion if I had the choice b/t cheap sushi or no sushi I would chose none.

For the guy that said that Zipang is one notch lower than Shikiji he obviously doesn't know a thing about sushi. Shikiji's sushi is probably the worst stuff I've ever had in Calgary....and by sushi I mean nigiri sushi or sashimi...not rolls. But if you like "sushi" made by Chinese people better then go crazy.

Zipang is a great sushi joint and it's worth the money.

I was there a few days ago and I will definitely go again. We sat by the window so I couldn't tell if the cooks were Japanese or Chinese. Total for two was $62 + tip.

You guys must have really small appetites or something or just order specials???

When I go for sushi I never order off the menu, I'm there for sushi and thats it. So I'm picking of the sushi list.

I was just at Zen8's on Friday for lunch and the bill was $110.00 for the GF and I.

    Give Wa's a try.

It's on the corner of 17th AVE NW and Center Street. It's right beside Video & Sound. They recently made some minor renovations so the place is a bit nicer than before. I'm not a wine drinker but they seem to have an extensive list of them, really good food and everyone is Japanese!

^ That's really rare these days. Most Japanese restaurants have chinese workers/owners.

Wa's IS really good, but it's quite pricey there. Zipang still gets my vote though
