Whats the safest way to work under a car??

jack stands are pretty safe.
never work under a car that is supported by just the jack.
jack stands are good, just make sure you have 2 jackstands for each half of the car thats elevated.
ie 1 on each corner if all the car is up, or 2 on the front corners if the front is elevated.
If you have half the car jacked up (either front or rear), place a block (chunk of wood, chuck etc) behind each of the wheels that are on the ground.
block the wheels for sure, jackstands are a dandy, don't rely on the jack(unless it has a lockout feature wich is rare) not even hydrolic jack.

No, YOU'RE on the wrong side
Never rely on a hydraulic jack. A jackstand is the safest way

Ramps work good as well, just make sure the e-brake is tight and to have some blocks behind the tire as well.
Most importantly, make sure you have your jack stands on the frame and the shake the car(not super gently either) before you head under. The rest of the advice above is excellent.
check your manual for proper lift points as well. have seen floors mangled with faulty placement of jacks/jack-stands.

I never trust my jacks, they both leak, and slowly come down. I place 4 jacks, one on each corner of the frame of the vehicle. A jack will destroy a floor panel if placed under one.
The ramps are easy to use, IF you're car is high enough to get on them. Most cars that are lowered, or have a large frontal overhang won't be able to get up them. I perfer jacks because I can get the car much higher, allowing me to do things that require a lot of room like take out a transmission.

I know THIS should be common sense...BUT...I have seen a few people NOT do it...
When using jack stands as you should...remember to LOWER the car onto the stand BEFORE you crawl under it.
I have seen people leave their car supported by the jack and just place stand unter the car...but if that jack does fail or slip...then the car is gonna come slamming down on the stands...

Yeah those ramps suck for most cars these days, I just use 2x6x8's to get up on them. (with support under several spots, otherwise the 2x6 will break)Originally posted by gp36912
^^^ and also slamming down on you what i would do if the car is lowered and can't get onto the ramps. then i would raise the car up and stick the ramps under the tires. easy solution.

The CT ramps also have new attachments available that lengthens the slope for lower cars... But I would just jack it up and place them under.

when you are talking about "jacks", is it referred to those manufacturer cranking jack or those long F1-style scissor jack?
