The diamond marketers say you should spend 2-3 months salary on a diamond. I personally think that's crap, but most women will tend to agree with it, remember it, quote it.

I remember they did a local poll a couple of years ago, and the average cost of an engagement ring in calgary was <$2000.

    Depends on what she's worth

There's a dozen rules of thumb, from 1months salary, to 3 months salary etc.

But it depends on your girl, if she expects you to pay 3 months salary on a ring, SHE'S A GOLD DIGGER! RUN! RUN!

I spent $2500 on my wife's, but to each their own.

Its supposed to be three months salary, but I want a simple ring so I guess I'm easy going.

get something reasonable that you can afford right now. If she loves you it wouldn't matter how much it is.....you can always upgrade later on....the ring or wife hahaha.

It used to be 2 months salary, now "they" (i'm assuming the jewelry stores) are saying 3 months. I think even 2 months for most people is ridiculous. If Rollie had spent that much on my ring, I probably would have killed him. Seriously, if a girl really loves you and wants to marry you, the size of the rock you put on her hand shouldn't matter one bit. She should shut up and be surprised with what you get her.

    ^^ good advice.

Make sure you buy a nice setting, the diamond can always be upgraded at a later date, most girls don't like the plain band with a nice rock, they'd rather opt for a nice band with an ok rock.

3 months salary for an engagement ring is such bullshit.

Think about the nicest TV you'd actually consider buying. Double that amount and there you go.

I think it's actually a pretty good system. Gauges how much disposable income you have.

After shopping for 2 months I found that the quality of the stone and ring combo for lower $ Amounts will not suite your lady very well and It will come back to bite you.
I spent almost 3 month’s salary for Ring + Wedding band. It’s a .75 main stone flanked by two .25 stones.
Shop with her in mind not the price. I picked the right style then bought the one that was in my price range. If you shop with budget in mind you will only end up with the bargain bin ring set she never wanted and all her girls friends will notice!!!
Quality purchases should have your heart involved not your wallet.

My girl and I have agreed on a less if more approach. That doesn't mean cracker jack ring though. We've found online pricing for titanium based engagement rings to be very good (<$1000), and have super unique settings and arrangements. Sure beats the standard solitaire settings in our eyes. Titanium cannot be resized though, so don't let her get fat....Look it up on google, its good stuff..

haha I think Hampstor spent like 1/5 of a months salary on mine! I'm getting gipped!!! That anniversary band better be the shit!!!!

Mine's still too big though cause I've managed to accidentally massacre quite a few people with it.
    Success is the ultimate revenge.
