    225/40/18

    225= the width of the tire in mm
    40= the sidewall height in % of the width (so 40% of 225mm)
    18= rim size

    often you can find a speed rating as well that is represented in Letter form (ie. s, t, h, v, z)

    oh, I learned something new. I always thought that the second number was the sidewall height in mm.

    are you sure thats right?
    Because 40% of 225 is 90 which is hella big for a sidewall.

    I may be completely wrong so dont quote me but it just seems a little big where as 40mm seems more correct.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tire_code

    When referring to the purely geometrical data, a shortened form of the full notation is used. To take a common example, 195/55R16 would mean that the width of the tire is 195 mm at the widest point, the height of the side-wall of the tire is 55% of the width (107 mm in this example) and that the tire fits 16 inch diameter wheels.
    Guess you're right.

    40 is the aspect ratio for the side wall height it is the realationship
    between the tire hieght and the tire width is is aproximately 40% of the tires width

    just as an example if you look at a tire for a truck say p245/75r16 and you say that the 75 is mm's you are saying that the tire is 7.5 cm tall side wall height where infact is around six inches.

    It seems big but it includes the part of the tire that is under the lip of the rim.
