Default Watching 1080p videos on computer: Video card or CPU dependent?

I've been downloading 1080p movies and TV shows, but I find that they're sporadically choppy when they play. The files are in .ts format and are being played with VLC.

Is this video card or CPU dependent? The system it's running on is an Athalon64 3200+, which seems like it should be fast enough...

I found in my case that it was codec dependent. Even on an older machine, with a good codec, I can run 1080p video smoothly.

I have an AMD Athlon 3000+ and I used to have that problem playing .ts files. VLC isnt a very efficient player and often types brings out the worst in video.

I had an old version of powerdvd that i used to use and it was very choppy but I just upgraded to the new one and its a world of difference. Video actually looks better and its extremely smooth even though cpu usage is around the same.

Try powerdvd out and see what happens.

Why bother downloading 1080p? , I doubt your monitor does

    1920x1080

All that extra resolution is wasted ;p
