Yes, that's the older one. It runs on a seperate system from Docsis (the motorola's). They want to get rid of this system entirely. If you take the modem in, they will exchange it for a newer docsis model. Definitely take advantage of this.

Cable modems aren't available in computer stores, that's only in the USA. Here you have to buy them either online and hope you can use it, or from the ISP itself. I have the SB5101 and have no complaints.

Depends, what package do you subscribe to or how much do you pay?

Assuming you are on regular high speed, you should be getting at the most 5000 and 512.

    Tried both from Calgary:

    And from Vancouver:

I first thought it was 'cause I'm in Saskatoon - somewhat far from Calgary, but even on Vancouver's server, there's really no difference. I've noticed SaskTel's adsl was slow, but I didn't think it was THIS much slower!

Oh, and just for reference, here's the stats from when I was doing some uploading to an ftp server:

    Still really no difference.

So can anyone definitively confirm that trading in my Cybersurfer modem for a new one will increase my connection speeds? Or at least guarantee that they will not decrease?

Maybe I should try borrowing a new Shaw modem from a friend and compare the two, before I make the switch.

    Thanks.

I just had a SHAW tech come to my house. He said the Docsis modem is a lot better than the old Cybersurf ones because

    1) Faster, better chip on the circuit board. Can take in and send out up to 5x more data.

    2) More stable - most of their service calls are using their old modems and are wanting to replace all the old ones with the new one because of this.

    3) With the recent addition of Shaw Secure, extreme will soon replace high speed and light will be gone - as its too slow and most of them end up going to high speed anyways. So give it time, soon you will get extreme for the price you are paying of high speed. So they want to get as many users on the extreme modem as they can right now to be prepared for later on.

I mean cmon this is the extreme modem you are getting for free, why would you not want it?

i think with these new modems shaw can monitor your traffic.. imean they can tell how much downloaded / uploaded.

The Old modems lost the statistics when you power cycled them, the new modems keep track of the usage no matter what. So its more accurate.

If you didn't say Shaw, I'd say dial up? Those are ugly looking speeds.

    Alright, this is the skinny.

Old modems, No real cap on speeds, they pretty much maxed out at 7megabits.

New Shaw modems, they have caps builtin, but are much better at handling high loads and upstream traffic.

Extreme - 10 mebagibts down, 1 megabit up
Regular - 5 megabits down, 0.5 megabits up.

If you are getting more than 5megabits right now on regular shaw service and dont want to upgrade, and are not worried about upload speed, stay with it. If not, get a new modem.
