    Default National Public Transit Initiative

So Toronto gets a 1 billion $ commitment from the federal government to upgrade their public transit system.

I sure hope that Calgary is getting some much needed cash. I don't have any experience with the TO system, but i wouldn't think that it is running at over 100% capacity like Calgary's is.

Mayor Bronco is saying that we "deserve" at least $1B too. i doubt that we'll see 1/2 of that if we see any of it at all.

Unless by some miracle Calgary is now part of Eastern Canada, I’d say forget about it. But it's simple. If you NEED 1 billion just withhold it from equalization payments. Giving money away that your province can use is asinine. Why give money to the federal government and hope they’re generous enough to give some back to help out.

Funny thing is, the 1 billion TO is getting is probably coming from Alberta

The only thing that Calgary has going for it is that it's the PM's riding.

I think T.O's system is great, mind you, i've never commuted in it. Calgary's certainly is atrocious though. We need a billion $, and we need a high speed rail line that runs from calgary, to edmonton, to fort mac even more.

We don't have enough population density for high speed rail.

We definately need that money for public transportation and roadways... IMO more than TO does at the moment.

A high speed train in the Edmonton-Calgary corridor would be great. At least then you could live a bit further out of town where it's more affordable and have a reasonable commute to work.

I can drive to SAIT faster from my house in Blackfalds (north of Red Deer) than you can get there from some places in Calgary during moderate to heavy traffic.

A high speed rail system between Calgary and Edmonton would be a huge waste of money, IMHO.

Agreed. We could probably build three more train lines and put everything underground in both cities for less than a high-speed rail line.

there already is a rail link, but it's not high speed. anyway, it's about 600km between Ottawa and Toronto. a 300kph rail line would take 2 hours to travel that distance and a commuter jet takes only about 45 minutes.

also, unless you build it on top of the 401, the population density is too high to build a new high speed rail line.

explain that to me... you want to build a bridge across the Burrard inlet to connect the island to the mainland? no wonder it's too expensive to consider
