    Default VR6 fuel economy?

    Just wondering if anybody knows if VR6 Jetta's are alright on gas. I know you have to use premium, but if it's efficient I'm not worried about it. Any ideas guys?

    They are actually alot better, near that of the new 1.8T's

    City
    1.8T = 24 mpg 9.8 L/100 km
    VR6 = 23 mpg 11.1 L/100 km

    Highway fuel economy
    1.8T 31 mpg 6.9 L/100 km
    VR6 30 mpg 7.3 L/100 km

    Do you actually have to use premium in the VR6? I know you do in the 1.8T, but I thought you could get away with a lesser grade in the VR6.

    In the manual it says VR6 can use uleaded regular, but i read other posts and they said only premium for vr6. Merfball what model do you have? 1.8t, vr6?has anyone used regular in their vr6 rather than premium?

    Explain. To my knowledge, in a stock engine, running an octane higher than the manufacturer recommends will not give any performance gains.

    Now if you are chipped or have other mods that can change compression ratio, advance timing, etc, then you might need the extra octane.

    I'm not going to get into a long drawn out debate on this, because we have already reached the limits of my knowledge. However, there was a good thread on this on the CSCC board last year:

    VW recommends Premium Unleaded for both the 1.8T and the VR6. So yes, if you ran regular, dont expect Top Performance.

    Sorry, what was your point again? oh yeah, that Running Premium in a car that is recommended by the manufacturer to run premium needs explanation?

    No, that Running Premium in a car that is recommended by the manufacturer to run regular unleaded is likely a waste of money.

    Well, if VW recommends premium for the VR6, then use it. If as you say, they only recommend regular unleaded, then I think you can get away with that.

    No one ever disagreed with you there, as no one brought up that topic in this thread.

    Yes, if you dont need to run premium, dont.

    my mother has a 1.8t passat and has been running 87 octane in it for the last 5 years. no problems whatsoever, but i'm sure the car isn't as fast as it could be. (not a concern for her).

    i have a 1.8t golf, and I've put in 91 octane since day 1. but then again, i'm chipped, so i sorta care about the performance.

    I have a 24v VR6.

    Yes you can run 87 octane in a VR6, but won't get the full potential of the engine. But if your only going to run 87 than why bother paying the extra for the VR6, just buy a 2.0

    If you want the power only run premium. I only run premium and get pretty good mileage. It's pretty close to my 98 accord running 87.

    I put in midgrade a few days ago, and the car still has good performance. For any of you guys what mileage do yo get on a full tank of gas. On my VR6 at about the half way pt i get about 200 kms on a full tank i get 380 or so. Why does my mileage suck so bad. Before mid grade it was all premium.

    I find if I put 87 octane into my VR6.. Engine check light comes on and thats a pretty good indication to me to get back to the 91 octane stuff... go figure!
