Initially, we didn't want to build it ourselves, but found some friends that have built decks before.
We bought a book from home depot to understand the basic terminology and crap, but with the friend helping us, it was quite easy.
We got composite decking from home depot as well, and we built a massive one that was the width of our house for under $4000. We were quoted double that to get it built, with regular pressure treated. You do save a lot of money.
Composite is nice as it is virtually maintenance free, so we never have to stain it or anything. Well worth the extra $$$ if you ask me.
