Default How much $$$ to drive across the country and back?

...in a 1.7 litre non vtec 2005 Civic? What do you think for gas, crappy accomodations and crappy food? I have a $1100 credit with Westjet that I was going to use to go home in 2 weeks but now I'm thinking about driving and wondering if it would be more expensive. What do you think?

I think it would be cheaper to go by car. But, where are you going? St. John, Halifax: it all depends!

Going right to the east coast of Newfoundland. Oh ya, plus it's $125 each way for the ferry so that's $250 right there.

I have friends in Montreal I can stay with as well as Halifax so that'll be free. Plus my brother on the west coast of Newfoundland and then my destination to my parents' place on the east coast.

Calgary to New Foundland then back to Calgary again, plus food and hotel there and back...

Sorry but I think flying would be cheaper.

Flying will also save you time. So you should factor in the time you lose from driving versus flying into your decision. IMO, you're better off flying.

    Flying will be cheaper 100%

Cost me over $1000 to toronto and back.

not only should you factor in food and living costs but the risk of driving and putting so many km on your car, as well as rock chips on the windshield and hood, tire wear and some other things that might wear out and end up costing you some money.

my opinion is to save the car and just use the jet. or maybe go see your friends in montreal or whatever by car and then use the credit to go to newfoundland, that is if your really keen on driving the highway.

    $50.00-65.00 per fill....reguarding gas is $1.00-$1.12 a liter

Total Est. Time: 34 hours, 20 minutes
    Total Est. Distance: 2116.62 miles
    3400kms each way

And thats going through the usa.

I have gone the other way and its even longer.

Im not sure how the hell you could ever get away will $400 there and back...im always over $1000 no matter what tyhe gas prices are...its like 3400kms each way...and thats through the usa...

Acura is getting 50+mpg and there's no way im under a grand...even if im rushing i would have to stay at a hotel 2 nights one there and one back.

I do the trip once every 2 months.

Usually when i get home i figure i put on 8000kms on my car almost everytime i go.

I'm trying to remember what it was the last time I did it.. Few yrs back, in a civic halifax to calgary was 600 or so on fuel (I did drop down to niagara though) and gas was also cheaper then...

    Do the math.

According to google maps, Calgary -> St John's = 6500km.

    X2 = 13,000kms

    Let's say 7L/100 km = 910 Litres.

    National Average Gas $1.15

That's $1046 IN GAS ALONE. Now think Food/lodging for a week (one way).

Just fly, unless you are going with a few friends and want the road trip experience.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

Yikes, my car only has 40,000 kliometers, I definitely don't want to put 13,000 more on it in a month. Thanks guys.

I cant believe this thread took so many posts to figure out the obvious.

Perfect post, TikTok. Shows the rediculousness of driving.
