Default Lawn mower, get one that's self-propelled?

I am in the market for a new lawn mower, push-style. I have a fairly small yard but it's pretty hilly. Does anyone have a self-propelled one, is it worth it or is it more of a pain to disengage when doing close-quarters stuff?

If you do, what's better, RWD of FWD?

Self-propelled mowers are great, especially for hilly areas. Totally worth it IMO.

RWD is much better because lawnmowers tend to lift at the front, meaning you have no traction. And having a self-propelled mower is the best thing you will ever buy for your lawn. It's not a pain to disengage at all.

RWD are easier to use when your trying to maneuver around objects.

I used a lot of both kinds, I say get a nice light weight push Toro mower, I only liked the self propelled for large yards not small ones, just my 2 cents from mowing hundreds of different yards

I've used both RWD and FWD, and I much prefer FWD. It allows you to maneuovre better (in my opinion) since you just press down on the handle and the wheels are in the air instead of lifting up.

I have a Honda RWD with a hydrostatic transmission. Bought it 7 years ago and have had zero problems. Works like a dream on my walk-out lot.

I didn't know that some RWD units required you to lift up the ass end. Mine has a transmission that can be released via the handle, so you disengage it when you need to steer. Very natural to do

my backyard is litterally shaped like a baseball diamond w/ a hill in the center, using a fwd propelled lawn mower was the best investment ever, like 30-40% of the workload cut down.

self propelled would be nice ... i mean you can totally engage into a slide and drift around your neighbors bush

Toro lawnmowers have a push-sensitive function. It's sweet. Instead of selecting a speed the wheels stay at, the harder you push, the harder it pushes. If you don't push at all, it doesn't move. Push hard, and it goes full speed, with a full range in between. Very cool.

We use these for landscaping and they rock!

    +1 for the Toro.

They rock, I have had my Honda mower for almost 4 years with no major service needed yet.
