High Km cars.

I'm looking at a 2001 maxima, everything is great except it has 259,000km.
Anyone have experience with these cars at 250+ km? I'm just wondering if its still good for another 100km or so.

my buddy has a 96 maxima with 350k on the clock. still runs fine.

I would first look for wear and tear on the steering wheel, turn signal, wiper washer switch, and seat.

It should be good for another 100K or so if the car HAS been maintained properly. I really don't see why not, at the same time while it's at 259K expect the unexpected.

I'm currently driving a 95 at 180km and still good as new.

Little things i don't mind, but i dont want no blown engine, or anything along that line. Probally would need new clutch and brakes though.

Haven't got the price yet, but what do you guys think is a good price for this car? 5spd, anniversary edition, 15", bone stock.

Think about resale too. If you are not planning on keeping the car forever, its pretty hard to get rid of a car even if it is in pristine condition with over 300,000kms on the clock.

My old S10 had 842k on it when I sold it, ran like a top.
My older brothers former work truck, being a '95 F250 with a 351 Windsor in it, has a little short of 1 million km's on it, still runs great and doesn't burn a drop of oil.
My winter car, being a '99 Saturn SL2 has 290k on it, still has yet to break down once.
my old Mx6 had 400k on it, but it was a heap.... so it really comes down to how well its maintained, as I've seen cars with 100k on it, and it was completely toast.

Any other specifics to look for when looking at high km cars?

look at underbody, look at the guy whos driving it see if he took care of it, look at the inside if its clean, just take it for a fulllllll inspection and ask them if they would buy the car them self (people doing inspection)

its actually from a used car dealer in edmonton, i'll be driving there on saturday morning. Any suggestion on a reputable place in edmon. that'll do car inspection?

I wouldnt pay any more than 9500$ with that many kms

It depends .. if most of those km is highway km .. that is fine ..

Make sure it is not a ex-realtor car, when a car with 45K / yr .. it could be a realtor's car before, means lots of stop and go, and lots of city driving.

really? i was thinking more of the lines of 7k or less, since maxima tends depreciate crazy fast.

Look for leaks around the engine, when it's first started, look for smoke from the tail pipe.

The reason most engines wear out is that they just don't seal well enough any more. Oil seals start to go, and the motor leaks oil on to the ground, or piston rings, head gaskets, valve stem seals start to go, and oil ends up in the cylinders.

If you can get a compresson, or leakdown test done, that would be best. Assuming the motor has good compression, and isn't leaking anything, there's no reason it can't last a lot longer.

And no one would give you under 5K for a 2001, high KMS or not. Honestly, I sold my 91 S10 for $2450 with 332K... No way he will get 5K for a 2001...

Take it to a Nissan dealership, and ask the service advisor to get the most knowledgable/skilled technician to take a very close look at it. Nissan technicians see enough of any given Nissan to know the things to look for, and any signs of problems soon to occur. By going to a dealership, their definately a 3rd party source, as you know their going to give you an HONEST opinion, as they have nothing to gain by not doing it, whereas they could lose their license if they do a shit job of the inspection, much like what you can expect from a shop that the used car place your going to: is affiliated with. I made that mistake once, whereas the mechanic didn't really "lie" outright about the car, he just didn't bother the check the things that he knew were wrong with it. So by him saying the car was "good"... it was.... but thats because he didn't do a comprehensive look at the turbo, the engines lifters/rocker arms, or the clutch... as he knew not to drive the car..... go figure.

I'm hoping to get around 5-6k for the price, but who knows.

Definately going to drop by a dealer and tell them to have a look.

Oh, insurance any place that'll sell temporary insurance? or do i have to go get a new policy in place right away to drive home?
