Flames came back a little in the second. Last shift was really good...but when they get a chance or break...they either take a dumb penalty or turn the rubber over.

First period licked nuts, but they started to pick it up after that. They had a bunch of decent chances, but it ended badly because of a shit turnover. Oh well.

I was at the game, way to many turnovers in the first period, and "hooking" penetlys... Dion turned it over like 4 times in the first period

FIRST PERIOD: A woeful start, especially in terms of defence leads to a Philly goal just minutes in. Aucoin let Briere take two whacks at a puck in front of the net, which proved costly. On a 5-on-3 later on, Philly scores again, putting the Flames in a 2-0 hole. The biggest problem evident is the lack of cohesion in the D. Everyone is making bad passes or poor plays that result in turnovers or botched opportunities. On the plus side, the offence is looking nice. Also, Goddard beats the crap out of Boulerice.

SECOND PERIOD: The Flames start to look better, especially on the attack. Philly is doing a poor job getting to the puck, especially in their own zone. The Flames are falling behind in the faceoff department but manage to pull together a concentrated attack which leads to a powerplay and an eventual goal. Phanuef's shot is tipped in by Langkow. Some sloppy play rounds out the period, but it's looking a little more even now.

THIRD PERIOD: The Flames turn it on. After the first few minutes of stop-and-go hockey, the Flames start putting pressure on the Flyers with good forechecking. Philly seems to be running around in their own end a lot and are starting to turn the puck over a lot more. On A Flames powerplay, Tanguay makes a nice pass cross-slot to Langkow, who nets his second of the night. The rest of the game is dominated by the Flames, who are forcing Philly to retreat further and further. Alas, a fluke mistake by Eriksson on a clearing attempt leaves Gagne with an open pass to Briere, who streaks in and shelfs it on Kipper. With not much time left, things slow down and the deflated Flames open the season with a loss.

EXTRAPOLATION:
A disappointing loss by the Flames tonight. Not in that they were bad, but in that they could've won it. A terrible start was countered with a good bounceback, and the Flames showed that they have the skill and talent to play well - they just have to focus on being consistent while staying out of the penalty box. A note on concern, however, is the defence - clearly, more work is needed in order to create a more effective backend, especially in regards to the transition game. Let's see how the next game goes...
