The Charvel came in. I promptly blocked the trem and put some better strings on.






It slays... like all the good parts of a Fender Strat (classic looks), Gibson Les Paul (mahogany body), and Jackson (super fast neck) rolled into one.

I've never been much for the looks of a floyd'd LP, but definatly a cool fucking project. There was one a guy was doing on HCEF a month or so ago.

I was going to wait until March before I bought new gear, but B_T's Charvel sent me into an envious rage and I became repulsed by the thought of playing on my shitty bolt-neck LP anymore. So, I drove to Edmonton and bought this:

I wasn't much of a fan of the neck inlays at first, but they're starting to grow on me.
I would have prefered the "Black" model with the fatass pickups and ebony fretboard, but this one was too good a deal to pass up, and it left me enough $$$ left over to get a Pocket POD (which is fucking awesome for the $$$, BTW)and some accessories.

It is a really fucking nice playing/sounding guitar though. I'm happy with it thus far, but we'll see how I feel once the honeymoon is over.

Getting jealous of someone's gear is never a good idea man It has cost me thousands! That's a pretty cool body shape, I've got a soft spot for Tele-style bodies with two humbuckers

Here's a question for you guys and gals. What do you use for strings and picks?

The Strat came with 9-42s on it but I'd like to get something with a bit more punch at the bottom. Seems like no shortage of strings out there, is there much of a difference between the various brands?

I got a few different thicknesses of nylon picks when I got the guitar, and I've picked up a few odd and sundry ones to mess around with. I was surprised that the pick could make such a difference to the sound. I've got some Dunlop delrin picks, 2mm thickness that I really like.

I use Elixir NanoWeb .010-.046 on my Strat tuned to E flat, and D'Addario XL Nickel Wound (round) .013-.056 on my Gretsch tuned to C.

For picks I am all over Dunlop Tortex .50mm (red)

on a strat, try 11's, i have 10's on my tele and it still feels really loose

I've tried running smaller, but they get way too slinky for my liking, and I'm constantly bending the strings and wrapping the E's under/over the fretboard.
I used to always run .12-.54's, but fingers were a lot more conditioned back then.

I have weak sauce fingers, so I use Ernie Ball Super Slinkys (9-42). For picks I used to use Dunlop Tortex 1.14mm purples, but they take time to "break in" before I can play anything fast, and when they bend in shape they never return flat. Kerry made me switch to the Dunlop Tortex .73mm yellows, and I had to relearn how to pick pinch harmonics, especially on the low E string. The nice thing about the yellows, work right out of the box for fast picking and never bends outta shape.

On my Charvel I've got 10-49s for D standard, on my Jackson I have 10-52s for D standard/drop C. I'll change the 52 to a 56 for drop G for a weird flubby sound. With the string that floppy, pinch harmonics sound boring. On my 7 strings I always run 10-46 with a 56 low B. Picks, its always Dunlop black nylon 1mm picks.

i run those pics too, i can't play with less then 1mm on anything but acoustic now
