i loved elixirs when i had them...but then the real problem was they never corroded so it took me a while to figure out that they were all stretched out...even if you have gross ass acid hands...imo its cheaper to buy a box of 12 sets off ebay for $50, thats like 2 sets of elixirs right there!

Could you link me to some on ebay? I can't find any 12 packs.

    Another question about restringing:

My strat came with 9-42s on it. If I went to heavier gauge strings, like light top heavy bottom elixirs or medium gauge ernie balls I'll need to adjust the action afterwards to take into account the extra string thickness right?

Not usually, the strings sit on top of the nut so they will never drop any lower than the ones you have and you only have to push them down the same distance. It'll feel like the action is higher, maybe, but it isn't... you just need to get used to the extra tension, especially with the light top heavy bottom Elixirs. I put those on my Jackson and the Elixir 52 seems to be about as tight as a normal 56, and it will go way lower without getting sloppy tension. Like low G low

technically, to get your guitar to play optimally with new string gauges you should get it set up...but i would experiment until i find a nice gauge set before getting it set up for that gauge

Well, my first ever restringing was reasonably successful. I think I'm going to have to go get it professionally set up at some point. The intonation is definitely off, it's a quarter step sharp further down the neck. But I'm really liking the light top heavy bottom strings so far. I ended up getting just a cheap set of Dunlops to try out and see if I liked that gauge. Think I'll be sticking with them.

    http://www.charvel.com/

Charvel has just come out with some of the sickest new guitars I have seen in some time... USA made stratheads, with top mount Floyd Roses, in sweet finishes, specifically made for hot rodding. For $950usd.
I ordered the So Cal in tangerine, and canceled my Jackson custom order because it became a total nightmare. But this hits just the right spot with me - Strat looks, Jackson playability, cool finish, sweet price.

Ok those look totally hot. And comparable prices to american strats to boot.

I wasn't aware beyond had such a large guitar community. If it's alright, I'd like to ask a couple guitar related questions.

First, I'm looking to pick up my first guitar; something I can learn on and get a feel for. I am a student and as such I'm on a fairly limited budget. I'd prefer to learn on acoustic (which as far as I'm aware is common practice), preferably not the kind you can plug into an amp; I don't see that as an option I would use much.
So, my first question is: What should I be looking for?
Second question: Where should I look for it.

Also, being that I'm mostly brand new to it, are there any books or softwares that you would recommend to help me along? I wouldn't have the time required for lessons, as much as I'd like them, so I guess I'll be learning on my own.

Thanks in advance for any input, I appreciate it.

Do you know anyone that knows their way around a guitar? Honestly I think your best bet would be to skip getting a 'beginner' guitar, and go straight for a used decent one. Nothing is more frustrating than learning on a shitty guitar, I'm sure anyone can vouch for that.

Some of the best deals I've had were from craigslist, but you also need to be aware of the lemon guitars. This is where its helpful having someone that plays go along with you to check to make sure its not a piece of shit.

This way, if you feel like you don't want to play anymore, you can sell the thing for what you paid for it.

The only problem with that is that none of my friends, at least not the ones in Calgary, play guitar. Besides, I think I'd prefer new; I'd really like to be the first person to own/play my guitar. I'm sure you know what I mean. I wasn't talking about a cheap guitar anyways, just a decent one that isn't too expensive. It's my understanding that for an acoustic, I should be able to pick one up for less that $400.
    Any input?

If you want, since you're not an '08, I can help you pick something out. I have a shitload of guitars at my house, you can try out all sorts of styles see what you like, and I'll help you find the right one at a shop?

Rage, that would be awesome. Plenty of my friend back home were guitar players but that's on the other side of the country. I guess I just fell in with the "wrong crowd" here, so to speak. I'll pm you.

Me too, except I'm a whore for used women.
    KIDDING.
I have a tendency to buy things new when I really don't need to; call it a bad habit.

Yeah I used to all the time. Then when I bought my amp ($1000+) I found one that was in the same condition on craigslist for $500, FUCK.
