the m5 makes 507 hp out of a 5L
the ls3 has 425-436 hp from 6.2L

I still feel like the americans are playing catch up and may never ... catch up.

har har.. Infact the chevy actually made 423WHP with headers and a tune testifies its over 500BHP with some good headers which the BMW has stock.

Furthermore this is made at 6500rpm, AND this thing gets 28MPG on USG's. So... To make it fair will a bmw even touch 30mpg with a metric Gallon? I doubt it very much.

I agree it's about time, but it's all good. It's an all-out war for top-dog honours out there, and we win.
Too bad the imports are hanging back with 5hp improvements.
It's not even close anymore; 350z for 50+g's or z06 for 97g's.

Easily more than twice the car, and less weight also.
The 350z is what, 3200lbs? And it has an optimistic 300hp!

Weird the Z's are off in price by a factor of one up there. Down here, a Chevy Z is 3x as expensive as a Nissan Z. Still probably 3x the car though!

Dude... the hp/displacement argument is so ridiculous. It drives me nuts when people bring it up, youve got what you got. My 250cc dirtbike makes 54hp, thats 216hp/liter! O my god, what amazing technology! But guess what... its still only 54hp. And the fact is that LS3 is in an affordable car (unlike the BMW) and its making crazy numbers. Who gives a rats ass what the displacement is.

As its been said before, the LSx engines are touched by the hand of god.

^ Yeah My .675 liter streetbike does 130hp, which is also pretty fantastic, the problem? 53ft pounds of torque at 11,700 rpm, only a few thousand short of the 14k redline. at 10,000 it puts out a pidly 44ft/lbs. Do you see the problem here? you'd have to rev the living shit out of the engine CONSISTENTLY just to get some decent HP/torque numbers out of it, and who wants that asides from anybody that constantly track races (and streetbike riders obviously) ?

WIth a not-so-uber tuned larger displacement engine, you have a much more managable performance curve, and the engine can go on seemingly forever without blowing itself apart. Yes it cool having a bike that puts out more HP then does a 2 liter car, but the drivability and long term reliability are seriously hindered. How many sport bikes do you see that still run TOP NOTCH with more then 80,000km's on them? none.

My uncle has the highest KM sportbike I've ever seen with 150,000km's on his ZX11 ninja. The engine is toast, for the most part, with ridiculous amounts of work needing to get done, and well on its way to its 2nd and last rebuild.

I think the whole hp/displacement thing was invented by Honda to sell more lawnmowers. It works well for them.

Yes, the engine displaces more. So what? It doesn't make the car any slower or less fuel efficient. Moar displacement = good.
