Anyone here working for the city? What are the benefits like? How many hours do you work? How are the people you work with? Any details help my decision to work there...
thanks!

My brother works as a heavy duty mechanic, my sister as a parks maintenance person. They both say it's super slack.
They both work 4 days a week (3 nights on weekends available as well), my sister works 38 hours/week. I think my brother does the standard 40. No clue about benefits, as far as I know they dont have them.
As for workers, I think it's your typical blue-collar demographic. Lot of middle-aged men/women in the parks department it seems.
i heard 7% rrsp contributions and every other friday off

Well depending on which department you work in. If it were in the office, the hours are 8am - 4:30pm. M-F
If you like standing around most of the day doing nothing, a city job is the place for you.
Don't work in the IT area. The politics is deeply rooted within the union people.

i'm thinking of applying for a mapping job in the IT department...

really depends on the dept. if working in City hall...
-hours are 35hr/week standard
-every 3 week cycle you get a day off or if you request a compressed work week (working more hours a day) you can get a day off every second week or even every week
-you won't find too many young people, they do get lots of summer students though
*** key is what dept or business unit you are applying for...lots of politics and non-sense on some floors.
what position are you applying for?
*** guess i was a tad late with the question
do you know what business unit its for? some business units have there own IT/mapping dept.Originally posted by Subwoofah

Development and Building Approvals/Addressing and Data Services
and another option is
Land Information & Mapping, GIS Mapping

I haven't worked in these business units but from what I know about DBA is a big dept and would allow for more movement...plus they pay more than Land Information and Mapping.Originally posted by Subwoofah

does DBA have the 35h/week?
what kinds of benefits do you get from working for the city? Union sounds good too... any draw backs?

Depending on your department, I know somebody in more H&S and he only gets 2 weeks holidays and basic benefits for the first 6 months - 1 year. The holidays don't kick in till you've been with them for 1 year as well, but again it all depends on the department.
People tend to be clique-ish. It's like being back in Jr. High where everyone has certain groups and some groups like to gossip more than others. If you piss off one person, you've pissed off the whole group. Which sucks if you're part of the same group. They tend to hold grudges.Originally posted by Subwoofah

-37.5 hour weeks (compressed work week)
-An extra day off every two weeks (Which day depends on Seniority)
-Great benefits (Blue Cross full coverage)
There is tons of turn over in this department, because there is lots of room to move up. You do have to have the proper education to work there though - I believe the minimum is a 2 year diploma (architectural technologies from sait).

good luck
thanks for the info...

My wife works there, and I was offered a job there.
It's a great career choice. The benefits are good, it's a pension, and it's not hard work.
Good Luck!!!
