Default Photography Newbie looking for tips (very overwhelmed)

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good photo editing software? I have an old copy of photoshop elements 2.0, is this good to start messing around with and figuring things out? Since at the moment, I can't justify the several hundred $s for CS.

Also, are there some good tutorial/beginner sites for photoshop out there? I'm just totally overwhelmed by what's out there, and would like to find some basic sites that go through some easy stuff.

    Thanks,
    Argentis

This is the best bang for your buck software:
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
is $99 upgrade and $150 for full version.

This is the best book to learn about Photoshop in respect to digital photography:
The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers
    By Scott Kelby (about $20-40).

I love this book. I got it from Costco 2 years ago for about $20, but I don't know if they still sell it. I know he came out with several newer editions from mine, but all ideas still work.

    Cheers,
    Andrew
