CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE
    -----------------------------------------------------------------

At about 2:05 AM on Saturday the 4 August 2007, police, fire
and EMS responded to several calls regarding a pedestrian hit
by a vehicle in the 300 block of 10 Ave SW.

Initial investigations indicate that there were numerous
people on the street and sidewalk outside a group of bars
located on this block of 10 Ave SW when a car traveling at a
very high rate of speed, in the westbound through lane, stuck
and killed two adult males standing on the road next to cars
parked on the westbound north curb lane.

Both males were pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. There
    were no other injuries.

The car did not stop and fled the scene.

Police are looking for a Black BMW or Chrysler 300 type sedan
with dark windows and will likely have severe front end
    damage.

The Traffic Section is conducting the investigation with
    assistance from the 1 & 2 Districts.

Police have closed 10 Ave SW between 1 Street and 4 Street
SW, in both directions while the investigation is underway.

I gotta say, things are escalating? Normally I wouldn't jump to a conclusion but for Gods sake things are really going off the deep end in Calgary lately...

That is horrible to hear! Does anyone know who the victims were?
Just to clear up the details, the two victims were standing on the road, next to the side parked cars when they were struck by the vehicle? The driver is obviously at fault here, cause of the excessive speeding, but why were the victims standing on the ROAD, when it was dark at night? Come to think of it, I see a lot of people standing on the road around clubs/bars... Maybe I am just interpreting the citybeat release wrong, someone correct me if I am wrong.

Regardless, this is a tragedy! RIP.

^I am in no way condoning the actions of the driver. It is fairly obvious that the tragedy was a result of the driver's high rate of speed. More than likely, the driver was impaired. Stuff like this really shouldn't be happening. It really doesn't take much to prevent accidents like these from occuring.

    This is very, very sad.

I wonder if this is some how gang-related... but I doubt it.

Absolutely horrible just the same. Pretty harsh way to die... right in front of everybody too

I don't hit the bars much anymore, but whenever I'm driving along 11th/10th ave late at night, I'm usually doing about 30km/hr just because of all the drunks in the street. I've had groups of people just walk out of the bar and straight across the road in front of me.

It's not just that they're idiots (although many probably are), it's just that they're drunk, and even a lot of good people just don't use their brains when they're drunk.
