Default What state's do Canadian's not have to pay US State tax?

I heard that there are 3 states where Canadian's either:
    1) Do not have to pay state tax by showing a Canadian ID (like a Drivers)
    2) Can claim it back some how

I believe the state of Washington is one of them (so good news for those who travel to Seattle). Does anyone know what the other states are?

I believe it's up to the merchant on whether they will charge you the state tax and make you collect it back. Basically if you are out of state, you do not have to pay state taxes or are able to collect it back. It works the same way if you go to BC or any other province. The merchant has the right to charge it and you have the right to apply and collect it back.

To clarify, it's not that they don't charge Canadians sales tax, you have to reside in a state/province, that has no state tax. So if you're from BC, SASK, ONT and shopping in WA, you're not exempt. Since we don't have provincial tax in AB, we are. Most retailers in WA are good about it. Some refuse (the Puma and Seiko outlets come to mind). For the amount of sales tax I've been charged at stores that refuse, it's never been worth it, IMO, to try and get it back

Thats right. As Albertans, we don't have to pay sales tax in any state.

The only state I've received an exemption is WA. I don't think this is a universal rule.

I had to pay tax in both CA and HI. Neither had exemptions at any of the stores I shopped at.

Crap. So, if I did want to claim it back. Where do I go? I'm assuming there's some tax form on each state's website. I'm going to LA and Vegas in a couple of weeks and want to see if I can get some money back. Some of it can be kinda big - like state taxes on hotels, car rental and such. In the end, I think i'll be spending a good chunk of change.

I don't think you get exempt for services, only goods, as services are consumed in the state. Although thinking back, I never asked for state tax exemption from McD's or any other restaurant.

i just emailed B&H photo so ask the same thing, they're in NY, but my family is travelling there in the near future and i was going to get them to pick me up a camera while down there... but they said that we are still required to pay the 8.625% tax, and it is NOT claimable by out of state customers.

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.
