    Default alternator belt tension

could a squeel be caused from the belt being too tight or should I tighten it more?

could be from either too loose or too tight actually.
just tighten it to spec. as per your haynes manual or fsm if you have either.

normally the belt should deflect about 1/4" at the center between pulleys, but it could be different.

thanks for the reply but I read somewhere that pressing the belt like that was only for V belts. I have a flat ribbed belt, Does that really make a difference?
