    Exclamation negotiating used car sales

i am currently car shopping. there was a really nice accord that i wanted to buy, 90 exr, std, 190,000km, well maintained, and the guy wanted 5100. i initially offered him 3900 cuz its rolling on bald winter tires, needs brakes done, timing belt replaced, and a new headlight.

the bastard offered to go down 200 dollars on 2000 worth of repairs/maintenance! wtf, that fuzzcock wont ever sell his car cuz its manual, yet he is so adament about his overpricing.

well, he is a career salesman, so i guess bargaining with him would have been harder anyway.

how do u guys deal with used car buying/selling?

if they haven't already had it inspected i usually start there, because they will believe you more about the things you saw that were wrong once a mechanics points them out.

so far i have been lucky, my car that i bought, the lady i bought it off of bought it new, and she had it serviced at charlesglen toyota, so i told her what was wrong, she didnt believe me. i told her to get a inspection, and the guy charlesglen guys came back with like 600$ worth of repairs. she dropped the price immediately luckily, the charlesglen guys didnt fully investigate all the problems and just wrote down the maximum possible price....for example they wanted $119.98 just to fix the horn, although the only problem was the horn wire was unplugged

i don't know what else to say.....if the price is really far fetched, once he sees that is doesnt sell go back in like a few weeks and he may take you up.
    Built not Bought.

Don't piss him off initially or he might not move much from his asking price. If you can't get him to drop the price to what you think is reasonable, THEN you can fuck up his day.

get the cash and count it out in front of him. Its easier to go lower than you are set for yourself when you see a big wad of cash in front of you.

basically keep working it down. leave and come back a few times. You probably want to do all these things:test drives, inspections, friends who can see problems that you cant cause you obviously like the car (youd be amazed at how much a person can miss when they want a vehicle). but do them each seperately. if you keep coming back the guy knows you serious, and it also gives you more negotiation time/room.

    1) know wholesale/blackbook value
    2) find out what other similar cars have been selling for
    3) if the guy is in the ballpark get an inspection
    4) once you have exactly what is wrong with the vehicle on paper take into consideration km's, interior condition, and exterior condition and go from there.

Obviously the guy/girl isn't going to take your first offer, so as a rule of thumb for cars less then 5000 bucks I start 500 lower then what I think is fair and then let them counter offer. If they arn't willing to deal, then you have no choice but to walk away.
You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.

True. These cars were targeted for an older crowd, and many prefer automatic. Dont sweat it too much, it's his loss, not yours.

Wasnt there someone on Beyond selling a 91 exr for 4K? Look that up first,. You need patience and cash in hand for used car purchases.

There was also a 1991 or 1992 that looked a lot nicer, but had higher km's. Looks okay though.

In my line of business I end up doing a LOT of bargaining.
Here are a few of my tricks.
    NEVER NEVER look interested.
Always point out flaws, and if upgrades are done, do not regard them in a positive manor.
Cooly throw in the fact that you are a struggling student.
Always pay in cash. (If possible, carry your willing price with you in cash, if most people are presented with cash on the spot they will NOT reject the sale).
Tell the person exactly how much it will cost to fix existing problems, or future problems. And account for your own time as well.

These boys are right, be it anything in the sales world, if you act interested and like you really want the item than the seller has more leverage at a higher price.

Lets put it this way, its kinda like a supply demand kinda thing...
