I foster failed guys. I ended up adopting my foster. Now to figure out what breed she is, any ideas? For pet insurance considering, putting mixed breed jumps the price.

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

She’s going to be a mixed breed regardless of you getting the genetics done… not sure if putting ‘shepherd mix’ would decrease your insurance

What even is a dog breed really? It's not like thuroughbred horses with a stud book.
Do insurance companies publish the breed premiums? Pick one that looks close?

I thought mixed breeds were supposed to be healthier? Who needs insurance anyways? What's a dog cost? $200?

We got our dogs genetics done (she’s a 60 lb lab looking thing) and it came back as a welsh corgi and Irish setter.. I think they just have a wheel they spin and know you won’t be able to QA it

Dog genetics is a pretty wild space. For $15 I'll send you a report that tells you what breeds you dog is a mix of from just a photo of one paw.

I've been researching and everything points to Embark. or Wisdom. DNAmyDog got the worst reports, CBC did a test where they sent a human reporters sample in and came back dog breeeds.

We used Embark. Not cheap, but the results seemed to be in line with what we expected. And we don't provide a picture or anything like that, so they didn't have a ton to go on. But they gave her 50% Shepherd which matches the eye test pretty easily, so it seems reasonable to assume the smaller %s were right too.

Yeah, that's about what we paid. It was on sale for $150 US so that's pretty close. They give you results back as a web link, so you can click through all sorts of different info. It has other things like potential major health risks for the breeds, if yours has any genetic markers for future issues, and a lot of other info. It actually even tells you if they have any relatives in their database, and how close (I think mine had some "3rd cousins").
