Default Replacing Timing Belt Question (JDM Owners)

I just went into the local Toyota dealership, got the oil change done as well as a foglight replaced, and I asked the parts & service manager about my upcoming timing belt change at 96,000 kms.

He says that because the car is "JDM" it uses a completely different timing belt than a "USDM" 3SGTE. Is this true?

He is tellin me that if they order a USDM Timing Belt and it doesn't work that I have to keep the belt and wont be refunded for it..so I want to ensure that I am getting the correct belt so I'm not stuck with a $100 piece of nothing.

Any JDM MR2 owners here that have got their timing belts replaced?
Did the timing belt ordered at the shop you had it changed
    work?

    Thanks in advance!

Yah thats what I tried telling him.

Then he got into saying that everything thats "JDM" is different, such as the whole drive train and everything..

It was at this time that I just said "Okay thanks anyways" and walked out the door.

So Steve. You changed your timing belt on your JDM engine with a USDM belt?

It's a little bit more work because of the master brake cylinder in the way.

It's a hard timing belt to do as it is, let along having a brake booster in the way too.

you can always check the part number that's on your belt and compare them before buying

Sounds like he is getting the generations mixed up. Gen 2 uses a different belt from gen 3 and the difference is one tooth.

I got mine done about a month ago. Replaced with the USDM timing belt and is fine. I had it done at A R Automotive. Took a little while cuz its soo tight in there.

It's the same belt, the manager guy is mistaken. Heck, my 1992 GTR ragtop has an all motor 3SGE that also uses the same belt.

Don't want to thread hijack, but I have a Gen3 JDM motor... do I need to special order a timing belt?

It's a different belt on the G3 but they seem to stock them in North America.
