    Default UK/Canada dual citizenship

Can someone who has gotten their dual citizen ship for the UK let me know a good way to start and anything you have found on the way.

There used to be the website for the UK Embassy in Toronto with steps outlined but the link doesnt exist anymore.

My Dad was born in portsmouth and my mom was born somewhere more north, so I know I will have it granted.

Just dont even know where to begin.

applying for the first time. I was going to go this summer and had all the paperworked filled out to get my citizenship and passport, but got a good job so postponed it.

The embassy could have been in Ottawa, that might make sense :P

You need to go through the Home Office in London for everything other than passports (done through the British High Commission in Ottawa). What you will get is a certificate of naturalization. You will probably need to supply information/birth certs for your parents, possibly immigration papers to Canada and marriage certificate/information.

I was reading about naturalization and I dont think that applies to me seeing as I do not live in the UK

Also I am 100% English by birth but have never lived there and was born here.

    Thanks for the links

Edit: that was the link I was thinking of, great thanks guys!

I will be applying next week! WOOT!

British High Commision will have all the info you need.

I got my kids british passports last summer (I'm british, they were born here). It was just a matter of filling out the standard form and then sending in my birth certificate with their application. The page listing the documents required is Documents Required. You'll need the long form of your birth certificate with your parents names on it.

They're pretty good, if you miss a document they will return everything and tell you what you are missing.

But i believe there was a limitation , something about being born after 1983 or maybe 1987

This is the webpage that relates to what I am trying to get: http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/app...?view=Standard

Alright, I have been trying for the last month to get some answers from them.

First it says that they will not accept short (wallet sized) birth certificates.... that is all I ever got. Does canada have long birth certificates?

Second, which form do I use, I think it is C1?

Yep, C1. To correct my other post, you will get a certificate of registration (this is what I have, not naturalization).

It's kind of annoying that if you are in the UK you get to apply online now but we still have to send everything through the mail.

I've always wondered about this, what are the intended benefits to dual citizenship?

I got mine pretty much right away after posting in this thread in 2007. Sent all the documentation to Washington, DC, a month later and I had my new British passport.

Main benefit is being able to work/live/travel freely in the UK and EU, without a visa of any kind.

I have had the forms printed out to start the process for my daughter for over a year now. I just have to sit down and actually do them. Looking again it appears You can apply online now.

+1, Both my parents were born in UK, but I've never considered getting dual citizenship.

I was born in the UK and got my Canadian Citizenship second.

As Adam pointed out the main benefit is if you ever want to live or work in the UK or EU. It is much, much easier if you have British citizenship. Travelling is easier as well but I've found if you are travelling with people who don't have UK/EU passports then it really doesn't make much difference.
