Default 1983 911 Turbo value help?!

My Dad's looking at a Porsche 911 Turbo tommorow. The current owner has had it for 17 years, it has 130,000km, new paint, and is apparently mint.

He's asking $42,000. Is this a fair price?

    Thanks.

That sounds slightly high for an 83

That's what I though at first, but then I found out that only 14,476 were made between 1978-1989. So they're pretty rare.
Here's the only info I could find about it:
    http://www.911turbo.com/turboclub/hi...ry_930_78.html

I'd expect it to be a low 14 high 13 second car, just because I'm sure our heavy 320hp stealth could do at least 14.3 on a good night, and this car is quite a bit lighter.

Thanks. If he gets it, I'll try to convince him to give it a try at Solo2 or a Track Day.

yep, 43000 is the approximate book value on an '89 930. That car better be mint thats for sure...and I would expect maybe less than 80000km on it too for that price...

Keep in mind that the car only has around 250-275 horse. Its a 3.0L i believe...they came out with a 930 turbo in '89 which had a turbocharged 3.3L at 300 hp.

    If it's an 1983 930. It has a 3.3L motor.

It also means that it's a grey market car, as the last 930's came to North America in 1979.

This means that the car is a Euro car and has been coverted if it's a one owner 1983.

Be carefull, as there were some hack jobs done on the electrical systems and exhaust systems when coverting the cars over.

The 930's were not in North America from 1980-1985. They returned in 1986 as a 911 turbo.

    It should have 300hp stock.

Take somebody with you who knows about these cars, as they are very expensive to fix and maintain.

ok so let me get this straight. To call a 1983 turbo porsche a 911, means that it has had to have had the Euro conversion on it because the only 1983 turbo porsches were called 930's?

The seller is calling this a 911 turbo, and I'm pretty sure it's not modified or converted in any way.

In a nutshell, here is the deal with 930/911 turbo cars.

The Porsche 911 cars with the turbo motors came out in 1975 and were marketed in the world as "930".

In 1979, Porsche decided it would be the last year for the "930" in North America, and did a final run on the car, with heavy marketing campaigns stating that only 50 final "930" cars would be delivered to North America.

The car was still sold in the rest of the world from 1980 to 1985 and marketed as a "930"

In 1986, Porsche decided to bring the car back to North America, but couldn't call it a "930", as the last North American "930's" were sold in 1979, so they called it "911 turbo", which continued on until 1989. In 1991-1992 the C2 turbo came out, which was the same 3.3 motor, but different body. 1993-4 was the same body as the C2 turbo, but a 3.6 motor, and was called a "Turbo 3.6" (the black car in the movie "Bad Boys")

Therefore, all Porsche 930 cars are 911 turbos.

There were some changes throughout the years.

1975-1977 the car was a 3.0L motor with no intercooler 270hp.
    1978-1979 3.3L motor, 300hp (NOrth American cars had 280hp)
1978-1985 was same as above throughout the world except USA/Can

1986 First year back for North America, no changes on car.
1987-1988 same as 1986 but with a better intercool/exhaust, you could also order the 930S which was a factory slantnose.
1989- Final year, car was same but with a 5 speed tranny instead of 4 speed.

The cars have major turbo lag, especially with the 4 speed tranny. There are tons of mods for them, but they are expensive. THey use Bosch CIS (central fuel injection) which limits the amount of hp you can get from them. IF you want more, you have to convert to an expensive stand alone EFI system.

However, with a free flowing exhaust, they will shoot 6 foot flames out the tailpipes due to the CIS system.

I know 100% that if a Euro car was imported to the US, it had to go through a rigorous conversion process making it street legal. There were a bunch of hack shops that did shoddy work on them just to get them certified for sale. I believe that the shop who did the conversion had to put their own type of identification plate over the Porsche ID plate on the door sill.

I am not 100%, but can say with some degree of certainty that this process also had to be done in Canada as well, unless the car was recently brought over. But this owner says he is the original one, unless the car was kept in Europe for a while and then brought over recently perhaps??

Getting info on these Euro cars is a bitch, as Porsche Cars NOrth America wont even acknowledge that the car exists.
I can only suggest that you take somebody there with you that is familiar with 930's, as you can be buying yourself a nightmare if the car was not maintained properly. It's not uncommon for a $10,000-$15,000 US Dollars for a minor rebuild.

    Good Luck

Well we checked out the car today. It's Gunmetal gray and the peint is perfect. If fact everything is perfect about it. The owner seems to be a real enthusiast and not the type to beat on the car(and he had an accent...).
I also found out that it was imported from Germany in 1982 (it's actually an '82), so it's the euro model.
So my Dad's going to but it. We're picking it up tommorow. I'll have pics up when I get the digi cam back. Meanwhile it'll be staying with my at the house after for another month while the rest of my family's in BC.

Here's some cool stats I scanned out of the Manual:
