86 and older Supras

I know they aren't speed demons, but how are they to work on? Any known bad things that happen often?

I'm looking for a cheap 2nd beater car that I can learn to work on, do some body work etc and have always liked the old pre-F&F style supras.

get a 82-86 supra for like 2000-3000 and dump a 7mgte (2500) in it and it will run high12's if your a good driver.

just think you can get a car with 4 wheels disc brakes power steering , brakes , windows , locks , mirrors and sunroof. They are pretty fast... I know that i have suprised people in preludes and integras with it. Not to many performance parts for them but they are a good first car and to learn how to drive Standerd, and if you really needed to go fast you can put the 7M-GTE from the MKIII supra in it. Reg Rimer (sp?) has an 82 supra with a 7M in it and its FAST, like 12 seconds fast. They are RWD and in the Supra you get an LSD witch is Awsome for doing burnouts. There aren't ANY aftermarket rim choices for less then an arm and a leg for. They are lighter and more nimble then the MKIII's. All in all a kick ass car and its super reliable. Just gotta watch out for 2 things...

I've always loved the look, and RWD drifter car sounds fun fun fun. If I could find a good one for a good price I think I'd jump on board.

Tho I'm really exploring everything from old american muscle (nova/chevelle, etc)to an old VW Mk1 or 2 - hell I was checking out a nice turbo minivan earlier.

Mainly something that will be easy to learn to work on, will be easy to get parts, and will be fun at the track/races/whatever.

The more I think about it, the more I think a Supra as a project would be fun. How hard would it be to learn basic mechanics? I know some gear heads but they are mostly domestic.

Do they make good track/drift cars? Any huge differences to know about between the 82-86?

i don't know about how the car is to own because i have never owned one, but my family has had several cressidas in the family, which shares the same engine and drivetrain. i learned the basics of mechanics off of the 5mge engines.....they are perfectly fine to learn the basics on

My friend has one that he wants to sell with a 7m engine and upgraded turbo. It ran a 12.77 @ 112 on street tires.

reg's car wasnt cheap.

rims aren't expensive... 4x114.3 isnt an uncommon bolt pattern.

u mentioned using the supra to drift. the supra isnt really a popular drift car because of its weight and behicle dynamics.

Bolt patterns Common....but the back spacings not. if i can remember correctly it was +48?? something rediculiously weird....I asstually got laughed at when i went to Kal tire to ask about rims.

Absolutly right. Killer to drive and they handed awsome. BUt its not a car that can be flung into and out of corners by a rookie. you could do it...just would take a lot of practice becuase of the cars Weight distribution

S-Zero can testify first hand that a straight engine swap in a MKII is not enough for 12's regardless of what someone else may CLAIM (read: B.S.). High 13's at ~103 mph is all his 7mgte powered '83 Supra could muster. Only after adding the Lexus AFM, HKS turbo upgrade and 550 cc injectors could he break 12s.

Stock offset is +8 on a 7" rim. Not that unusual.

The Celica Supra is a pretty good car to start out with. But so is a Nissan 300zx. The car is not that complex, and there are more aftermarket parts for it than there are for the supra.

Khyron, I have an '84 non-turbo 300zx comin up for sale soon. 2 seater, 5 speed, fully loaded, a/c, power everything and of course its rear-wheel drive. 190000 kms. I don't have a set price but I will accept any reasonable offer.

I know someone is selling a turbo on beyond too for like $1200. Its just rusty, but a killer deal.
