ASUS Motherboard w/ Geforece 8800GTS

I'm looking at buying this motherboard (Asus P5K):

This board supports ATI Crossfire. Am I asking for trouble using this card (Geforce 8800 GTS):

Can this board run two of the Geforce in tandem or does it require ATI cards?

If it's not recommended running this motherboard and video card combination, could you suggest either an equivalent ATI card to run with the Asus motherboard or an equivalent motherboard to run with the Geforce card.

If you want to run two nVidia cards in tandem, then you need an SLi board. CrossFire is an ATi only technology, BUT! you can still run any single PCI-e video card in the primary PCI-e expansion slot.

As for video card equivalencies, any single ATI HD2900XT card will give a GTS a run for its money, although if you want the most performance from a single ATI card, then look at the HD2900XT cards with 1gb GDDR4 memory, such as:

Although the 512 mb cards are still quite nice, such as:

Right now, the wait is for ATi to catch up their drivers to nVidia in the tandem card area. As it stands, ATi has better single card drivers than nVidia, but nVidia has better dual card drivers than ATi. Also, to power any HD29xx series or 88xx series cards, you're gonna need a very robust power supply

but if all you're planning to do is run one GPU then the Asus P5K will just do fine.

I'm using an 8800GTS 320MB on my P5K and never had a problem, runs games at max details.

if you are planning to go SLI it ain't really worth it right now IMO.
2x8800GTS 320MB vs 1x8800GTS 640MB
performance + money wise. the 640MB wins.

Do not get a HD2900 xt.... I suggest a 8800 GTS 640 MB Version.

These benchmarks/comparisons speak for themselves. It's about $150 cheaper, and only 5-20% slower.

I'm running the P5K Deluxe with an eVGA 8800GTS 640MB and it's been rock solid from day one. On the other hand, I have no intention whatsoever of ever running two vidcards at the same time.

You should buy your graphics card to suit your monitor. If you have a 22" widescreen, the 320mb GTS is all you need, 24" the 640mb GTS works, and then 30" the GTX is your only option. Don't buy any ATI card out right now. They benchmark worse then the equivalent Nvidia and have much higher power consumption across the board.
