    Default International car sales

I am wondering if anyone has any experience buying and selling cars across the border. I have my eye on a few good deals, but I am wondering what extra fees are applicable and how to minimize them.

I know someone the drove a car across the border to avoid paying duty on it, then recieved a bill from customs once it was registered in the other country. I heard it depends on the year of the vehicle as well as other factors. Anyone know?

Brother in Law just bought an Impala on Ebay. Guy drove it to the border, bol paid for it then declared it when he was coming back. I believe he had to pay GST and duty - on a 4K car it was about another 800 bucks.

The other expense is the inspection, getting DRLs hooked up, etc. The DMV nickle and dimes you a fair bit.

I'll ask for details for you tomorrow when I see him if no one else has specifics.

Depending on make and model, if it's not the EXACT same car sold in Canada, it will need a federal safety inspection, and will need to be brought to Canadian safety standards if it doesn't pass. Aside from that, customs duties, registry fees, inspection fees, title transfers to another country, etc.

If you can buy it here in Canada, then do so. You'll save a lot of time and effort. If you REALLY want to get the car in the USA for whatever reason, then yes, it can be done.
