Selling the Yamaha 700 quad this spring and moving in to a dirtbike....hoping to have a pic to post here soon! Thinking of the Yamaha WR250...as virtually all the riding I do is trail and back country.

Just an FYI, dirt bike insurance is stupidly cheap. I don't remember exactly, but want to say it was under $50 for the whole year. Not worth risking fines IMO.

Bought two bikes last weekend. a 2006 CRF450X for myself and a 2008 TTR230 for my woman.

After reading the horror stories about valve issues and constant rebuilds, I'm really hoping this CRF lasts a while. I checked the valve clearances yesterday and they were all within spec except for one exhaust valve, which was 0.001" on the loose side.

Also, what's the deal with street legalizing a dirt bike in Alberta? The city of Calgary website says it's possible, but out of province inspection rules say RUM bikes cannot pass inspection.

I wouldn't bother with trying to legalize a bike for the street. Start off with an already street legal machine like a DRZ400, CRF230L, etc and then mod it for off road use as well.

pretty much. by the time all the work and paperwork is done just easier to buy one done already.

If you're looking for a new bike, the CRF230/TTR230 are about the same. Used market has quite a few good examples out there. You can even get "big wheel" versions of both. (Standard wheel versions are more of a "wife bike" sorta thing.)

Once you outgrow that, move on up to a 250F off road bike. (WR250F, CRF250X, etc)

skip the 230, just goto the 250. save yourself the time and hassle. The new 250's are easy to ride and forgiving.
