Question: how long would it take for carbon monoxide, from exhaust fumes, to shut down the human body?

3 minutes... CO no longer is present in exhaust post 84 or 85 cars, I think it is 0.01% blood concentration.

No longer present? really? How do people die from it? or why is it dangerous to leave it running with the garage door closed?

I heard somewhere, and I'm not sure if it's true, I may have heard it here a while back, but it was something like breathing in the exhaust fumes from a new porshe is cleaner then breathing the air in LA?
un leaded fuel, aswell as cat's remove ALL co.
Its not good because of asphixiation (sp?) CO2 occupies more volume then 02

comparing the effects of H2S and CO

haha!!
Comparing? You gonn die.
H2S is way more hazardous compared to CO
But cars will only mostly give off CO2 because of it being cleaner burning and not doing poor combustion creating the CO.
CO2 will only kill you in the absence of O2Originally posted by Scope951

CO carbon monoxide has 400 times the affinity for hemaglobin then O2 or CO2. So in simple terms CO binds to hemaglobin ( allows you to carry O2 and CO2) 400 times strong and takes up all the spots for transport throught the blood thus you lose your O2 and CO2 carrying capability. You need a hyperbaric chamber or at the least a high partial pressure of O2... ie high flow oxygen to bump CO off the hemaglobin and allow O2 and CO2 to bind. It can take hours to get CO levels to drop. Even in a natural state your body will get rid of the CO but it takes a long time!!!!
Depending on how much CO is being produced and the size of the room will tell you how long you can last. Might take 10 to 20 minutes in a garage to even come close to offing yourself.
Hope this helps and sorry i can't spell
oh yeah i know that...i just did not know cars now produce very little if any, CO gas.

Thats what scope said, ^skyline^... asphixiation... as a paramedic you should know the word... absence of another volumous gas (o2) you would die from suffocation because of lack of oxygen.
And no; it is 3 minutes... to reach a blood disolution level of 0.01%.
But its nice to know, you know how to use google... next time use the information learned properly.
Yeah H2S I would say is way more hazardous. I've taken my H2S Alive course, and that shit will knock you out faster and kill you than CO any day.
Yeah I was taking H2S training for work too and that question was brought up at one point
