Default 8800 GT is the new 8800 GTS

This new card outperforms the 8800 GTS 640MB in almost every game out there and performs only about 10% under the GTX, yet it costs half of the GTX. Memory Express is currently selling the Superclocked version at $280. If you're an enthusiast gamer and was considering on upgrading, this is the sweet spot for you.

This graph pretty much says it all:

Games benchmarked included Unreal Tournament 3 and Crysis.

"If you're an enthusiast gamer" you'd wait to see what the new refresh for the 8800GTS 640 will be and also wait to see what the R670(HD3800) is capable of. Nvidia has already said the R670 is faster, roughly 750 points in 3DMark06.

Yeah that would be a nice bump in performance but I am going to wait for something just a wee bit better at something in the $350-400 range.

750 points? That's barely a few frames per second difference. Unless they manage to sell it at an even lower price, which I doubt, then the 8800 GT is still the sweet spot. As for a refresh of the 8800 GTS, the 8800 GTX/Ultra will replace it when their 8900 GT/GTX is released.

    blah, who cares about 3DMark.
Hopefully RV670 matches the 8800GT and uses even less power/generates less heat...but I'm not holding my breath.

Is NVidia basing their "RV670 is faster" statement on what was expected of 8800GT? Because it seems it came out quite a bit faster than everyone expected.

    from RFD:
"Just a heads up, this card is faster than the 8800GTS, but costs less. The 8800GTS has 96 stream processors, but the 8800GT has 112. However, they'll be releasing new models of the 8800GTS 640MB (no word on 320) with 112 stream processors soon -- those cards are faster than this one. So, just keep that in mind when deciding on which card to buy.

    Anyhow, here it is:
    XFX GeForce 8800GT 512MB 600MHZ 1.8GHZ GDDR3 PCI-E DIRECTX10 Video Card

    1. Call of Duty 2 OEM DVD *Bundled with Selected XFX Video Cards Only* (a $40 value!)
    2. NVIDIA - The Way It is Meant to Be Played Mouse Pad (a $20 value!)

Or, you can go for the EVGA overclocked version for $259:
    EVGA E-GEFORCE 8800GT Superclocked 650MHZ 512MB DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDTV Out DIRECTX10 Video Card Edit: Back in stock.

    1. Hitman Blood Money (PC Game) (a $25 value!)
    2. NVIDIA - The Way It is Meant to Be Played Mouse Pad (a $20 value!)

The difference is that EVGA has a step-up program, so that extra $10 is not just for the overclocked card.

Now, the last bit of information. Apparently, you can use EVGA's step-up program to step-up from a higher priced card to a cheaper one for free. All you pay for is shipping. So, for those of you with EVGA 8800GTS cards handy, you can step-up to the 8800GT for free, unless you want to return your card or resell it.
Edit: Sorry, the 8800GTS with 112 stream processors isn't out yet. My mistake."

These cards are going to be a bit tighter on allocation over the next few weeks, if you must have one i'd suggest getting your name put on a the backorder/wait list now so you're higher up in the queue wherever you are ordering it from.

Don't forget... Crysis and Unreal Tournament 3 are coming out in November!!

And most importantly, wait for Nov 15th. Nvidia is timing its release of next gen vid cards with Crysis. So dont buy anything yet, wait 2-3 weeks for these new cards to hit shelves, and wait till there are some reviews out there.

tried NFS ProStreet demo at 720p everything maxed and don't know wheter the game itself is laggy or my 8800GTS 320 itself.

so tempted to buy an 8800GT 512, think its worth it or wait for a bit more?
always sold out in memoryexpress, but can buy one really quickly from evga.com

Depends if you want to spend $250 on a 8800GTX-esque card or $400+ on a 8900 GT when it actually comes out.

Once they get caught up with demand these cards will be cheaper.

This is the best card since the NV 4200 or ATI 9500 - awesome.

I believe 8800GTS 640MB is still quicker than the equivalent 8800GT when 4xAA or high res is involved. But the 8800GT is definitely faster than GTS 320MB. But because of this, the 8800GT 256MB is definitely the card to get for us poor folk. I've had Rainbow Six Vegas now for what, like 3-4 months, and I still can't play it as I don't have a new gen card.

So if anyone is "upgrading", sell me your old card!

This review shows otherwise, as the 8800gt outperforms the 640 GTS over and over, even at high resolutions.

    GT > GTS Period

    Here some more proof.

    http://firingsquad.com/hardware/nvid...nce/page17.asp

Even at 1920x1200 the 640 GTS MATCHES the GT with 2x AA.

    Look again?

It's the detail. Once detail and demands are pumped up, the extra stream processors are what make the difference. Having said that, I would probably be quite happy with the 880GT. I don't usually turn on all details anyway. BUT, DX10.1 is supposed to mean 4xAA on all the time, which means your 640MB GTS will likely outgun the 8800GT.

I'd be interested in seeing how the new gen of 8800GTS performs.. But then they'd probably be priced higher as well.

And $220 for your GTS is too much.

I'm sure the next gen of GTS will destroy the GT, but it's deffinately the king card right now. We'll see on Nov 15!

I'm failing to see anywhere where they're comparing this to the GTS 640MB, they're all using the 320MB.
