Default winters on front all season rears...dangerous???

my girlfriend needs tires and her landlord told her to just get 2 front winters and keep the worn all seasons on the rear to save money.

please explain why this is dangerous. I told her it was and I am pretty sure I'm right but I don't know the technicalities of it...

worn tires = bad no matter what...

u will have 'grip' on the front and nothing on the back... nothing like turning a corner and sliding out of control or something.. or even worse braking and having your back end slide out

snap oversteer will pwn her. No grip in the back = nothing to stop the rear of the car from swapping ends.

No, it doesn't. Don't post unless you know what you're talking about, especially in a thread that involves someone else's safety. It's a bad idea, I wouldn't recommend doing it to save a few bucks.

Ive seen it done before, back in the high school days my friend had that set up on his pos prelude. he said "the car pulls from the front so thats where it needs snow tires." One day we were driving and he had to hit his brakes hard, the car spun out from the back lol

i ran it last year, i wouldnt do it again. the car would always spin when you turned. and then when you braked a few times the back end would start coming out.

^^^ Better not be able to move properly than not stop properly.

It's a bad plan, don't do it. Tires are the most important part of the car; yet it seems to be the part people neglect most.

They aren't talking about putting winters on 2 wheels and worn-out all seasons on the other 2... they're just talking about replacing 2 worn out tires with new ones. Again, you shouldn't post in a thread regarding someone else's safety unless you know what you're talking about.

thanks for coming out but here's a quote from the ottawa newspaper telling you to put the tires on the rear:
If only two snow tires are being purchased for a front-wheel-drive vehicle, the tires should go on the back.

This is the worst thing you can do, I wouldn't suggest it. I've lived in BC and Alberta and having one set of winters and one all season is a bad combination. Ask your girlfriend would she ever wear high heels on one foot and snow boots on the other while she is walking on ice or snow? I'm sure that she will say no. I'm sure she wouldn't take the chance with her feet, then why would she take the chance with her vehicle? People think that tires aren't important, but they are one of the most important things people should take care of on a vehicle.

You may accelerate and brake in straight line well enough, but if you ever, EVER touch the brakes in compacted snow or ice when you're going about a corner at medium to high speed, you will swap ends.

Better to go with All seasons on all fours than a mixed set on FF car.

In the snow and ice, it's all about stopping. Not accelerating...

This isn't some gay thread about what color wheels would look best on your car, this guy is asking a question for the safety of his GF. He's looking for real fact-based advice, not your opinion.

Hahaha what a joke... did you even read those articles?? Let me show you some direct quotes from that first article:

"He and Mr. Frisby agree that if you're going to put snow rubbers
on the daily driver, then put them on all four wheels."

"Combining snows and all-season radials is even more of a no-no on these
    vehicles."

"So what's a safety-minded car owner to do? The experts suggest the
    following:
    1) Put snow or winter season tires on all four wheels."

Also, that second link deals with the same topic as the tirerack article, not whether or not it's ok to mix summer and winter tires.

Is it really that hard to read an article?

Get new tires on all 4 corners or don't bother at all. I ran the two winter tire setup on one of my cars a few years back and it felt like a accident waiting to happen everytime there was a significant snowfall. Might even be better off with all seasons than to mix tires.
