Does anyone have advice on which dealer to use to get the recall letter? Do they need to see the car or can I phone in with the VIN and my credit card number? Is there a dealer that someone knows of that will do it all over the phone?

lol dont get scamed by the dealers in calgary.
A letter can be produced by any dealership and the ones in the states will do it for free.
Call a BMW dealer in the US and give them the vin# and have them fax it to you.

Unfortunately the US dealers have put an end to this practice. My dealer in the US won't even print off the vehicle service history as BMW USA prohibits it now... as ppl were using this to get around the recall letter.

BMW -Recall documentation can be obtained from head office by calling 1-800-831-1117 or RIV will accept an internal system report from a U.S. dealership on letterhead or with dealer stamp.

It's $500. AFAIK, BMW has closed off all the loopholes now. No more free recall letters unless you have hookups.

You have to prove ownership of the car. They don't send out letter willy nilly.

Thanks for the replies. So 500$, and take it into the dealership. I already have the daytime running lights active. Has anyone dealt with the dealers in Calgary for the letter? Which is the better one to go to?

Considering both dealers are owned by the same person, I think you'll have similar experiences at both.

Yeah try caling both, sometime they "slowplay" the whole experience, so see where you can get in first.

Ok. I'll also call the Edmonton dealer as well. If I'm spending 500$ I'll naturally go where the quickest service is.

I quite enjoy Edmonton BMW. They're pretty good with their scheduling.

That $500 charge is so garbage, I brought my bmw up last summer and all i did was call bmw north america, gave him my vin and a fax number, 5 mins later i had the letter. FOR FREE
I had a print out from the dealer and when i got my OPI, they would not accept that.
I cant believe they charge $500 for sending you a piece of paper.

Too bad there's not a way to get CarFax to lobby RIV to accept their information since the reports usually state something about recalls. The dealerships really are turning into stealerships but then since they're only selling half as many cars I suppose they need to find a way to make money somehow...needless to say getting DRL's programmed and the Recall letter at Crowfoot now comes to a cool $850. Nice.

A trick that may work for those of you that haven't imported a BMW is to get the oil changed at a dealer in the US prior to driving it back (this is what I've done twice and is a good idea any way you look at it) and since you're getting work done there you'd be more likely, if not entitled, to get a "Vehicle History Report" which is what you ned to fax to RIV.

They won't give out that report in US dealers anymore, even if you go change your oil.

Really, wow talk about cracking down. I would have thought anyone that owns a BMW in the US would be entitled to seeing a History Report (i.e. also shows options, etc.) for their own vehicle.Originally posted by rage2
