I'm signed up with GreenMax, but that doesn't mean I'm getting wind power... they just charge an extra $12.50/month that they say will go to developing wind infrastructure. Who knows what they're actually using it for... but it'd be nice if it were going to wind.

At $150/year that's enough to install 100W of installed capacity each year.

Just note that even though a company says they are providing green power, you are still connected to the same grid as everyone else in Alberta and one type of electricity cannot be separated from another type. electrons from wind generation are still just electrons

But putting money into a green power retailer will probably encourage more generation from alternative energy. Some people are just misled into thinking that they are getting electricity solely from a green source

If you do plan on putting solar or wind on your own property, consider the return of investment. even though solar panels and wind turbines are getting cheaper, it will probably take a good 10-20 years for you to pay off that initial investment. one of the reasons why wind and solar arent taking off as fast as could be is that natural gas, coal and oil are still being sold at dirt cheap prices. natural gas is around 3 cents/kwh, solar was at least 7-8 c/kwh the last time i looked this up
