Depends on how you define self-defense. Finland had two wars with Russia, the first, the winter war was self-defense in the strictest sense, we fought alone to protect our land, the second one was with the Germans to try and take back our land that we lost in the first war with Russia.

Well what I said was mostly facetious, but I see it as "friend of my enemy is my enemy." The only reason Finland fought the Germans was because the Russians were pushing the Wermacht back and the Fins were forced to make peace, under the threat of being conquered altogether (the only thing preventing this was the fact that the Soviets were so preoccupied with Germany, Finland wasn't really on their agenda). Finland ignored pleas from Britain and the U.S. to end ties with Germany, but they still didn't until their president was forced to resign.

Finland was key for the Nazi's in their quest to conquer Murmansk in the early stages of Barbarossa, had it been successful, no Allied provisions or equipment would have made it through and WWII could have had a very different result (ALL BECAUSE OF FINLAND )

Of course Finland would not listen to U.S and Britain, they didn't send any military help during the war. What possible motivation would Finland have to listen?

Your other arguments are pretty good though, except that the Russians did attempt to take over Finland in the Winter War, and they did in fact put an enormous amount of effort into it. If Finland was not on the agenda then Finland would have remained untouched like Sweden.

Maybe the war could have ended differently, but the Finns didn't care about anything except for Finland, and Russia was a much greater threat than anybody else.
