Maybe a few more dollars in the public coffers would be a good thing.
How about you stay home, we don't need anymore of you people here bitching that they want more more more from the government. If you think more money in government hands means more money in the peoples pockets you are in for a rude awakening.

In all fairness it is sort of odd to have to pay for health care here... Among other things, roads aren't really any better here, we've had most of our highways divided for yrs, etc.. It just seems odd that alberta is 'sposed to be so far ahead of NS, but when you sit back and look at it, not so much.. With all the resources here from oil, to wood, to agriculture, its is a pretty kick ass province, but could be wayyy better.. (And westerners do have an odd outlook on the way they view the east, as lazy welfare assholes, when in fact most of us are out here keeping your province running.. I'm sure you'd rather have a million mexicans running around here though )
UIE has no taxes from their oil revenues, which is pretty nice of them. Something doesn't add up here is all.. Anyways, back to my 6fig oil job, I'll shut up..

Haha. I wasn't so much bitching as making a point similar to Dexta there. $30 a month or whatever for health care isn't going to break me, especially with a bigger salary out there, but we hear soooo much about how much money there is in AB, and facts like shitty social services sort of fly in the face of everything Canada is based on and at least on that page, makes NS look that much better . They have the money to give everyone a big cash payout, but not to pay for healthcare?

What happens if you just don't pay it? Do you just die on the road? How does it work? Same as the states if you're without insurance? I'm not looking at this from a "Wah wah wah I don't wanna pay" standpoint, rather a "I thought Canada was the pinnacle of socialized healthcare for all"

Its the exact same argument for the oil companies. Why are they threatening to pull out? Because its the only card they have. They aren't exactly going to welcome less money with open arms, but when push comes to shove they will cope.

Look at Newfoundland. Danny Williams stuck it to them and in the end the oil companies came ANYWAY and the province was better for it.

Look at Venezuela. Even on the most socialistic terms possible with recent nationalization, only a handful of companies left.

bottom line is that the oil companies have to (and want to) show sustained earnings to thier share-holders
and so when royalities imposed cut into profits, that money has to made up for in other places, which inflict as least damage on the company and of course senior management, layoffs and minor return projects get cut
of course the news prints the companies cry foul & hardship

i have no problem with out of province workers, i do not particularily like the province bashing, otherwise should stay home! IMO

The fact that the gov in NS is so worried about the BS social services is partly to blame for NS taxpayers paying so damn much in taxes. The fact that you have to pay for your health care monthly is more than made up for by the fact that you are paying minimal income taxes. No sales tax also. I was kind of shocked that I had to pay for health care when I moved here but it's just something that has to be done. The health care here is better than in NS if you have kids. Alot of things that you have to pay for ontop of your "free" healthcare for children is actually covered here in AB.
If you do not pay it they will send you to collections, keep your tax returns,GST etc. and screw your credit in the end. Odds are your employer will just take it out of your pay anyway, you won't even see the fact that it is gone. You will notice that alot of things are a hell of alot cheaper here than they are in NS as well as a few thing will be more expensive. All in all you will end up with more money in your pocket at the end of the day.

For the OP, I am not too sure about actual rig work but I work in Fracturing and we have been going balls to the walls lately. With the oil companies trying to save money it means they are drilling 2-4 wells on most Apache,Encana and CNRL leases lately which means that everytime we go out to frac for these companies( which has been every week lately) we make max bonus's. I have been getting 4-5 max bonus's every week that I work. According to the owner of our company as of Dec 20th we are booked solid for all of the possible working months in 08 for frac and cementing for all our camps in AB. At this rate if things are as booked as he says it could add another 10-20k on my income this year. So all in all, the royalty review has benefitted me(in the short term anyway)
