Default Hot water tank drain valve.

It just occurred to me that I need to flush the hot water tank as part of it's regular maintenance. I've never done it before and noticed that the drain valve doesn't have a normal handle on it. How the hell does this work? Do I just use a flathead screwdriver or a socket to turn it? Is draining it as simple as opening the valve and closing it when it's done? I've read a few sources that I need to turn off the burner and use the relief valve and then relighting the burner, but it doesn't say to do that in the manual. What's the right way?

I'm fairly mechanical, but putting out any kind of burner or pilot light is not something I'd ever do as a "just in case".

Lots of bad things can go on when you mess with that shit.

Just turn it with a screwdriver, tighten it when you've drained what you want out. I never turn my pilot off, no reason to.

Good on you for remembering to do it, I never did my old one, and it rusted to hell in 6 years.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

Have you ever done it before? I have heard of many horror stories with those plastic valves not closing properly after draining the tank cause all the sediment gets stuck in it.

    Just something to think about!
