Transport Canada to implement automatic speed-limiting device

In an effort to thwart habitual speeding, Transport Canada has developed a new system that can make exceeding posted limits difficult or impossible. The device utilizes GPS and a speed limit map coupled with technology that caps a vehicle's top speed based on the legal speed of the road being traveled. Once the vehicle arrives at the predetermined speed limit, the device makes it very difficult to go any faster. For now, Canada is looking to slap this stingy speed governor on the vehicles of perpetual speeders and reckless drivers, but the technology could one day be used for all drivers. Lovely.

Luckily for drivers here in the States, a strict speed limit governor is just un-American, and legislators know it would be very unpopular politically suicidal to implement. Still, we're sure there'd still be some people willing to embrace technology like this. Heck, a lot of parents of 16 to 18 year-olds probably wouldn't mind purchasing this device to keep their teenagers in check.

Ya i highly doubt that wouldn't happen... and so many many reasons why it wouldn't work for specific people.. and implimenting such a system would be a disaster.

How long before we have monkeys driving Buicks on our roads? Seriously, let's make better drivers instead of taking the driving ability out of the equation. How about mandatory suspensions for at-fault accidents? Or re-testing anyone involved in an accident? Or a three or five-second flashing yellow with the green light to warn of an impending light change? There are many methods that can be implimented to curb poor driving habits; unfortunately none of them raise revenue which is why I believe this idea will be stillborn.
I am sure I read that a rental-car co. in the Excided States of America uses GPS to track speeds of their rentals and fines you if you excessively speed. And most new cars have "black boxes" which monitor and record speed, throttle and brake position and steering wheel angle. They stop recording when the airbag goes off and can be subpoenaed for use against you. Big Brother is watching you through Onstar's eyes!

its a nice try but a system like the first article describes would be very easy to disable...much like the Breathalyzer lock out systems we have, they will probably help reduce speeding but do nothing to address the real problem.

Speed doesn't cause accidents it just makes them worse, its not like you hit 120kmh and you automatically have an accident.

Atleast the GTR is set at a reasonable speed of 180 km/hr (reasonable for a car of its caliber).


On a side note, this will never get implemented here....how are they going to replace all the revenue that speeders are paying into?

It will never happen for two reasons:

1) Like everyone else said, the government won't want to give up the ticket revenue. It's the same thing as smoking. If the government really wanted everyone to quit they would just ban the product all together, but they like the tax revenue.

2) The public as a whole won't stand for it. The government that would dare implement such policy would be lynched in the streets.

If it was enforced I doubt many people would dare hack it. If you got a speeding ticket and they found out you disabled it, it would probably be a HUGE fine.

It's a stupid idea though. It would make driving in a lot of situations even more dangerous (i.e. on the highway and merging and maneuvers you have to do to avoid accidents).

Canada is socialistic now, it's not hard to phantom it being communistic

as for freedom of speech, you are free to say whatever you want as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others. so, that is in fact not free speech ... but political correctness, which is in fact limited access to ideas and opinions

I think that is fathom, not phantom. Canada is not "socialistic" there are many countries closer to socialism than Canada, and they are nowhere near being Communist.
