No, it's not made of solid gold -- just ordinary aluminum. But it does come with the swagger of being labeled no. "1." And that's evidently worth a record $14.3 million.

I think in Abu Dhabi the lower the # on your license plate is, the higher your rank. Therefore, #1 would mean that this guy is the most powerful.
Also, I believe he drives a Veyron.

Clarification: the guy pictured is not the buyer of the plate. He's the head of Emirates Auction, Abdulla al Mannaie.

And there is more than just one "1" license plate. There's A 1, B 1, C 1, etc. The one that is on the Veyron is C 1. While A 1 belongs to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai. But the A is not shown, because that plate was made before the creation of the alphabetic categories.
Who wants to go and try to steal the king's license plate? It must be worth at least $20 million!!!
