Post '05 E60 upgrade tires and wheels

    New to the thread.
My new setup is '05 530i with 17" Conti's with 225-50-17 all around.
My question is....want to go up to 18" and have a summer setup and keep the all-seasons for winter.
I know 18" will work but does anyone know what the largest tire size is without concerns for rubbing (cornering).
    Saw 255-40-18's.
Don't know if I can stagger on this car.
Need to know what offset to be concerned about.
    Thanks for any input.

You can stagger. All sport packaged cars come with a stagger.

If you are going 18", why not go 19"?

Rubbing is only a concern if your are lowering the car.

On non-Xi E60's, with 19 inch wheels you can safely go up to:

    F: +12 ET, 8.5J Width, 245/35
    R: +28 ET, 9.5J Width, 275/30

You can lower with the HR Sport Springs, and you will be fine as well. Do not try to fit any larger tire sizes than what I have listed, or else you will rub.

what is the effect of going to a 18" or 19" setup in terms of actual speed and odometer? Obviously there will be a discrepancy. With larger wheel/tire setup, am I covering more or less distance at faster or slower speed?

Going between 18" and 19" won't affect the speed of the car or the odometer, only ride quality. The tires on a 19" setup will have smaller sidewalls to compensate for the larger diameter, and this makes a little rougher. I'd still suggest going for 19's though they fill out the space much better, especially on a 5 series which isn't exactly a small car.

As you increase wheel size, the sidewall of the tire will decrease accordingly. This maintains the original overall diameter.

My boss has 20" wheels on his brand new 535ix and he took them off because they were rubbing. Dunno if you meant rubbing isn't a concern until 19"+

No rubbing problems with 20" when the correct size wheels and tires are used

IMO, it makes more sense to upgrade an E60 to 19" rather than 18" if you have a dedicated set for the winter.

Xi E60's are different offset than non-Xi's.

Much harder to find custom wheels with the correct offset (35+) for Xi E60's, as most custom wheels are in the 15+ range. Fits fine for non-Xi's however.

    Default offset

Can someone explain what is meant by the offset on wheels.
I know the bolt pattern on my E60 is 5/120 but have seen offsets shown of 18 and 41. What does it mean and what does it matter?
    thanks

Just a note that 20's also fit with H&R springs...
They do with the M5 anyways...

Offset is how far they stick out or stick in.

+41 will have your wheels look like they are closer to the center of the car.

+18 will cause them to stick outside the fenders away from the center of the car.
