    Default Advanced Road Test

Hey Guys, I'm looking to get my non-GDL license, and need to take the advanced road test. I went into the registry, and they informed me of a place, which I can't remember the name, that does the testing for them.

This place is open on Saturdays, and opens at 9:30am, they will also allow you to rent a car for ~$30.

I was wondering if anyone knows of this place, or has any suggestions on where to go? I know that I need to book it ~24 hours in advance at least..

Also, what is the test like? Is it like the basic one? How hard is it? How long does it take?

I know there are threads like this already, but I couldn't find them, and I know most people will only read the original post, leaving me no useful information.

    Thanks!

I just took my test today at derek browns driving academy.
The test basically consisted of driving on deerfoot, 16th ave, barlow and some small communities with lots of playground zones and uncontrolled intersections. Its not really like the basic one because there is no parking involved. I thought it was quite easy, it only took about an hour to complete.

Hope this info is useful to you.

Any specifics? Tips? Tricks? That kind of stuff...

I should probably re-read some of the stuff... Like controlled intersections... You always yield to the person to the right, even on T-intersections, correct?

And there's no parking? As in parallel?

Also, anyone know a good place that will let you rent a car?

you dont have to rent a car you can use your own you can go through ama to rent a car or you can borrow your parents car just make sure you have the insurance with you. there is no parking what so ever. basicly just follow the rules of the road. make sure you yeild at un-controled intersecitions(got nailed for that) and also use your turn signals. I lost 5 point pulling into the parking spot after the test.

I'm not sure I would want to take the test in my car... Being a 5spd, and ricey looking, I'm worried that will bias the tester... Can't borrow my parents car. I was going to borrow my friends '00 Civic SE that's stock, but I don't think it'll be available.

How many points can you lose? I remember on the basic one that you could lose ~75? And if you rent it through AMA, do you have to take their course? I'm looking for a test only kind of deal.

you can still only loose 75 point like before.

to rent through ama you dont have to take the course. my brother did the advanced road test in his 5-speed and he had no problems. I sure hope they arnt biased. I did myn in my 240sx and I have suspesion and exhaust. they didnt say anything

Its pretty much what is said above, but when I did mine is September the guy asked me to name at least 10 road signs I see and explain what they all mean. Remember, test starts as soon as the car moves.

How anal are they about how you drive stick? I'm a lazy bastard and don't downshift while braking and keep my car in neutral when stopped.

Did the test today. Borrowed a friends car. They're anal about signals and brake lights, cracks, air freshners and radios... Was a breeze. No parking at all, no parallel, nothing. They basically have you drive around, and then for about 5-10 mins they have you do a "Hazard awareness" where you just point out all the possible hazards (kids, cars, etc).

Took about an hour, and passed, easy.

Can't you just go through any registry, they same way you get your GDL?
I was suppose to do this test 2 years ago, but I still haven't gone, I don't see the point when I have all my demerits and such....

If anyone is still looking for someone to take the advanced test with, shoot me a pm and I will give you a phone number for an instructor with the AMA.
It's really straight forward. Basic driving, obey speed limit, respect signs (that means DON'T STOP AT MERGE SIGNS) and you will do just fine.
By the way, this is in the NW @ Crowfoot Crossing.

I actually made a point to ask, upon taking my test (although I took it in an auto)
The instructor said she didn't care how you shifted, downshifted or came to a stop; as long as the ride was smooth. It depends from instructor to instructor I suppose.
