If you want stars, no moon is best. SUPER SUPER clear skies are a must. Have fun, it's a challenge, but with a little luck, the results turn out quite well!

Here is my pics from the night. I couldnt shoot the moon since I only had a small wide angle lens to use. So here is a pic of some stars...Nothing to special...

mitsu your shots are amazingly clear, well done!
My buddy busted out his hobby telescope. He tried to aim it at Saturn, and he actually got it sighted! It was the coolest thing ever, seeing this little ball with rings floating there, but I only got one look before he lost track of it.
Was in the studio shooting in Victoria all night lastnight so I missed most of it but I leaned out the window and grabbed a few shots of it... heres one.
Melinda and D'z, are you guys using a tracking system on your tripod? Obviously the last one with the star trails isn't, but how did you get them so clear?

Drive an hour and a bit out of the city to litterally the middle of no where and set up your tripod with a shutter release cable and expose long enough to get the light, but not long enough for the skies to move. That was my big secretOriginally posted by Gibson

My photos should still have the EXIF attached to it. But off the top of my head, I was mostly shooting f/2, 30s, ISO 800 last night. Bumped it to 1600 a few times. The star trails were 30 minutes.Originally posted by ex1z7
And Melinda / D'z - care to share your settings for the astro stuff? I've never been able to shoot it right, and have no idea what to do.. I'm guessing bulb, iso 200-400, f/11-16 ? 5 minute+ exposure?
And for light trails.. up to 20-30 minute ?
We were shooting wide angle, so any rotation from the Earth's axis wouldn't have been photographed or too obvious on a 30s exposure. Other than that, try getting it in focus, which I failed with on the last twoOriginally posted by Gibson

You can make out the rings of Saturn on this pic.
Don't you just focus to infinity ?Originally posted by D'z Nutz

Haha no, sometimes that doesnt work. I have a ton of photos at infinity that still look blurred, from both lenses. It takes patience hahaOriginally posted by ex1z7

I find it usually does work, but you have to be very very accurate (i.e. find the exact spot where it's infinity). I know on my lens you have to line it up perfectly with the middle of the infinity symbol. You can go out of focus if you go over (which is what I did - I just cranked it to the as far as it will go on the infinity side and everything was out of focus).Originally posted by Melinda

You have a couple of photos that are great... you must be very good at photoshop!

The first pic I see a bright light but in the second two I can sort of see a faint looking something above the moon...is that saturns rings?

Not like you can see their color or anything, but you can tell that little dot has rings.
