cartooning question?

i havent been using photoshop for very long (a day ) and i want to know how to do one.... ive looked over 5 different how tos but i have a couple questoins,

-when start off by using the pen tool around the side mirror... so thats done? now what? how do i continue on my way outlining other stuff without it making a new layer? cause whenever i finish the mirror then go to so the hood it open a new layer and you can see what you have already done

u make a new layer, and u use the pen tool to outline the whater, and u right mouse click and "stroke path". Then u can hold CTRL, then make a new path, or u can right mouse click and delete the path..
